I was thinking about this after reading some of NG's post yesterday especially in light of the mantra from the right about Democrat run cities and crimes rates.

It looks like there is plenty of ways to interpret data on this issue. Nobody is totally correct by a long shot and a lot depends on what data set is being looked at.

I (or anyone) would be a genius and in real demand if I had the answer to fixing high crime rates anywhere, let alone urban cities. So, as someone who comes at this from a Liberal Progressive perspective with a bent toward fiscal conservatism in my economic thinking, my best answer is I don't know how to fix it.

I have ideas though...like jobs and education...but more on that later.

What are your ideas on how to fix crime in urban cities?

Empty the cities out. Move people to Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, and Maine to start. Have a new WPA to manage the move and the public works jobs (Broadband, wind farms, roads, hydro, nuclear, bridges, airports, etc).

Pay a relo bonus. Offer healthcare.

This subject has been beaten to death on lit for years. If you give people free shit they will vote for you, the more free shit the bigger the crowd, the bigger the crowd the more votes. I generally agree. So that would mean breaking up the banks, Amazon, airlines, and curbing market power in the labor markets to make them "free". It also means government compensating where the market is inefficient and/or a failure - like in Healthcare allocation.

What Laz doesn't understand is that when you give away free shit the disparities in society become bigger. It's not the government's job to wet nurse its citizens, its responsible to provide equal opportunity under the law, freedom of choice and provide for the defense of its people.
