Are people assholes in the comments for no reason?

I posted a story, saw it had a comment and got excited to read it. And, well...the comment in its entirety is: "fucking moron wrote it". Ouch! I know I am probably not in contention for a Nobel Prize any time soon, but that seemed a bit harsh. Is the story really that bad, or was that guy just an asshole?

I wouldn't weigh too heavily the opinions of intelligence by those who don't default into capitalization and punctuation.
He/she wanted to fire off a zinger that was anything but.

The story is not my cup of tea but in comparison its somewhat unique and certainly holds its own in category.

Try to focus more on why you enjoy the process than comments justifying what you've done. Doubly so if you want to write more unique scenarios/different from the usual run of the mill fluff here, which you seem to do.

This.

If you write outside the box, you run the risk of inane comments. You're under no obligation to keep them, so delete them if you like. But don't engage or give trolls oxygen.

In my experience of the online world, some people are just assholes everywhere, just because they can be. I figure they have small little lives and wouldn't say boo to anyone in the real world, and being dicks online is the only thing that gives them any sort of pleasure. And then I just ignore them, because I honestly don't give a toss what someone like that thinks of me.

I guess Twitter was down for a few minutes the other day. All I could think of was how were all those people dealing with not being able to spew hate and judgment for what must have seemed like an eternity?

Thank you all for the kind words! I am glad to hear that I am not, in fact, a fucking moron.

Any question that begins "Are people assholes" can always be answered "yes." Yes, people are assholes. If somebody is being an asshole to you, it's probably not your fault. It's because they are assholes.

What KimGordon said is exactly right. The Internet magnifies the assholery in people. The inner asshole, which is reluctant to come out in the real world because it might result in one getting punched in the face, comes out in full force over the Internet because assholery can be carried on with impunity online. It gives a certain kind of person a delicious thrill and sense of power to know that one can be a dick and get away with it at no cost to oneself.

For a thorough treatment, see linguist Geoffrey Nunberg's 'Ascent of the A-Word: Assholism, the First Sixty Years.'

Remember, its the internet. No matter what the situation may be, there will be someone anonymously trash talking you.

I find that if your story isn't what the reader thought it would be, or better yet goes against their world view, people get upset.

Having written a story that features a woman physically overpowering a man, I got a share of this. If it's not constructive, laugh it off. They're showing their own fragility.

Yes...
If it grinds your gears, you can delete it from your comments..
But there really are arseholes out there..
It's not personal... they are arseholes..

My first story was approved and I delved into the comments. LOLOLOL

Truth is, the internet is a place where angry people can have a voice. I've never commented on a story, but I've read a bunch. I suspect most people are like that. Others are just miserable and need an outlet. Very, very few are legitimately trying to help and offer good feedback. Hell, even some of the crappy ones help if they give you some detail.

I figure if someone misses something major and complains it doesn't make sense or better yet, make assumptions as to where the story is going in subsequent parts and is wrong - those are just opportunities. If they don't understand something, it's an opportunity to become a better writer. Fix it so even the angry dummies can't miss things. If they think it's going one way and it's not, you're doing something right.

I never commented on a story until I began writing. That’s because I wanted helpful comments so I could try and make my efforts better and it seemed only fitting I should reciprocate. I now usually comment on every story I read, which nowadays isn’t very many for various reasons, and try to make my comment constructive whether I’m praising the story or finding fault.

An interesting thing about the OP’s story is the following day, after the moron comment, another reader sprang to the OP’s defence. That’s something which has happened to me and no doubt to many other writers.

Arsehole comments are only ever made anonymously. There’s nothing you can do about it, not even respond because they’re anonymous, which is the whole point. Even if you do leave an answering comment they’ll never read it because they’ve already moved in to the next writer they want to insult.

Just continue writing what you want to write, stories you enjoy both writing and reading yourself, and hope you’ll find readers who also enjoy what you write. Arsehole comments are annoying but it’s not life or death. Literotica isn’t real life, it’s just fantasy.

The short answer is: YES! Consider how many people are involved with this site; you're going to get some strange ones for sure.

I don't turn off comments nor do I delete any of them. Well, maybe I will if they are utter nonsense.

I manage to attract negative comments to my stories. Of course, I may just be a lousy writer, and I like comments in the sense that it shows somebody read it. But a constructive comment would be a nice change from what some people write.

Part of the issue on LIT has been suggested above. On a site like this there are going to be some crazy mixed up people, me included. Plus there's the old debate about erotica versus pornography. When people comment they didn't find a story erotic, sometimes they mean it wasn't pornographic. We can talk about the differences, but people looking for an anatomically-themed story aren't going to enjoy necessarily a story where the eroticism is in your head rather than your pants.

Negative thoughtless comments are part of the deal on LIT. Best thing is to enjoy writing and move on.

Not as many people listen to Kim Gordon's music as should. Their loss.

To be fair, I don't really either. I just needed a name one day, and she struck me as hot, cool, and age appropriate. Now I'm just used to this being my other name.

I just experienced this, too. First comment on my first post tells me it's a pile of crap and I have mental issues. But seeing the replies in this thread let's me know it"s not just me, so thanks. I needed to see that
