To Protect and Serve? Or to Murder and Terrorize?
To protect and serve.
This is a motto that is found on the patrol cars of the Los Angeles Police Department and it has been bandied about so much in discussions about police, many members of the public feel that it is supposed to describe all police all across the United States of America.
That would be a noble and admirable thing, however, I’m not seeing a lot of protecting and serving.
In May of 2020, a cop named Derek Chauvin handcuffed an unarmed black man and had him face down on the ground as knelt on the man’s neck for almost nine minutes as the man struggled to breathe. Chauvin was told multiple times that he was killing his prone, helpless, handcuffed victim, but he refused to get up off the man’s neck, until after he had been dead for a full three minutes.
In April of 2021, another cop killed another unarmed black man after the cop pulled him over because an air freshener was allegedly hanging in his rear-view mirror. The cop ended shooting and killing the unarmed black man, claiming that she meant to shoot him with a taser, but she grabbed her handgun instead.
Only problem is that a taser is yellow and is much lighter, has a different shape. There’s no way I’m gonna believe she could mistake her handgun for a taser.
Then, there’s the case of Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old kid who was shot while he had his hands raised and was surrendering to the police.
Chicago Police Union head John Catanzara claimed the shooting was "100% justified" and that the officer's actions were "heroic."
On CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time" Thursday night, Catanzara told host Chris Cuomo that the officer deserved praised for shooting the 7th grader only one time. Body camera footage released Thursday showed Toledo with both arms raised when he was fatally shot with a single bullet by Officer E. Stillman.
"He could have been shot multiple times, but the officer assessed in a split second," said Catanzara, who earlier this year defended the mob that violently stormed the Capitol building, saying the group caused "very little destruction of property."
So, the killing of unarmed children is totally acceptable behavior? Cops are allowed to kill people who are no threat?
So, are cops there to serve and protect? Or are they there to murder and terrorize?
And, if they’re there to murder and terrorize, why are we funding them with our tax dollars? I don’t know about you, but I am very much opposed to having my tax dollars go to pay for murder and terrorism.
