FBI Director Says Domestic Extremism ‘Metastasizing’ Around The Country

FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers Tuesday that domestic extremism has been “metastasizing” around the country, saying the number of domestic terrorism investigations has grown “significantly” since he took over the agency three years ago.

Wray testified before lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, his first appearance before senators since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in January. Wray said he believed the Jan. 6 attack was “not an isolated event” but rather part of a troubling and growing trend across the nation.

“The problem of domestic terrorism has been metastasizing across the country for a long time now, and it’s not going away anytime soon,” Wray told senators. “Whenever we’ve had the chance, we’ve tried to emphasize that this is a top concern.”

The director bolstered his statement with a series of troubling statistics: The number of white supremacists arrested in 2020 had nearly tripled from when he took over the FBI in 2017, and the agency currently has more than 2,000 domestic terrorism investigations underway. That figure is more than double the amount it had in 2019.

The investigation into extremist groups who waged insurrection inside the U.S. Capitol is getting closer to Donald Trump, a former top law enforcement official explained on MSNBC on Saturday.

"Let's go to new numbers on the capitol insurrection," MSNBC anchor Alex Witt said. "Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest investigations in American history. So take a look at these figures: 210,000 tips, 15,000 hours of video, data from 1,600 devices. 80,000 reports with 93,000 attachments related to witnesses and suspects. 900 search warrants were executed in almost every state, as well as Washington, DC. There are 320 people are now facing charges with charges expected at least 100 more."

For analysis, Witt interviewed former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi.

Frank, these numbers are staggering," Witt said. "Put this into context, how do you interpret these numbers?"

"Well, what we're hearing, Alex, is that this has now become the largest investigation in FBI history," Figliuzzi replied. "And it's not just about the number of subjects arrested or under investigation, but as you pointed out, it's the data behind this. It's the overwhelming tranche of body camera footage from officers, electronic surveillance, CCTV from the Capitol, all the social media posts before and after."

"Prosecutors are reportedly focused on a conspiracy case that involves members of the Oath Keepers militia," Witt noted. "Why is this significant, Frank?"

"We've been hearing a lot about the Proud Boys and now in the double digits the number of Proud Boys," Figliuzzi replied. "But now the focus seems to be turning toward the Oath Keepers. And hat's significant because the Oath Keepers -- at least some of them -- seem to have a relationship or affiliation with some in the Trump circle, even Roger Stone."

"The neat thing about Proud Boys and Oath Keepers being looked at investigatively is we may see application of the RICO statute -- that's a racketeering statue that's been used against groups like the Hells Angels and the mafia. So prosecutors may be saying there's enough here that this group stands for enough violence that we're going to use a racketeering statute, take their assets, take down the group, that's an opportunity," he explained.

Donald Trump's role in a coup attempt isn't any great secret. He tried to lead it out in the open by what he said and did.

Hmm. It’s no great secret that Trump led an attempted coup yet the Biden Administration has shown no interest in doing a thing about it? Wonder why. Appreciate the interesting take. Do you think it’s the presidents declining mental and physical health or something else holding them back?

Well, so far the Biden administration has been busy doing what the trump administration failed to do regarding ramped up manufacturing and nationally coordinated distribution of the vaccines. But maybe they’ll get around to it after New York is through with him. What are your thoughts?

The only reason Biden had vaccines to distribute was Trump's program.

But, it was nice to see all of the Trump-inspired violence across the nation last night.

He's still effective even without social media...

No reply. Hmm.

Yep, right wingtards only know violence when the going gets tough. It's going to be a rough 4 years for them.

We are in possession of 400 million guns and several trillion rounds of ammunition. If we were a problem, you'd know it.

This! If people like that were a problem there would have been some kind of incident where they tried to overthrow the government, right?

'People Were Killed': Mick Mulvaney Slams Trump's 'False' Claim Capitol Riot Posed No Threat

Mick Mulvaney, who served as White House chief of staff under former President Donald Trump, on Saturday strongly criticized the ex-president's latest Capitol riot remarks.

On Thursday, Trump slammed the Capitol security measures that were put in place in the aftermath of the deadly January 6 insurrection, which left five people dead including a Capitol police officer. "I think it's disgraceful—it looks, for the world to watch—absolutely, it's a political maneuver that they're doing. It was zero threat right from the start, it was zero threat," he said.

Mulvaney called the former president's remarks "manifestly false" in an interview on CNN's Newsroom on Saturday. "I was surprised to hear the president say that," he said. "Clearly, there were people who were behaving themselves and then there were people who absolutely were not."

He added: "To come out and say that everybody was fine and there was no risk is just, that's manifestly false," he said. "People died. Other people were severely injured. To say there was no risk is just wrong."

Mulvaney explained that he watched the riots unfold live on television and saw violence take place. "There are videos of folks behaving themselves and protesting peacefully. But they should not have been there. And it's not right to say there was no risk. I don't know how you can say that when people were killed," he said.

Two Capitol Police officers filed a civil suit Tuesday against former President Donald Trump for physical and emotional injuries they say they suffered as a result of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

In the lawsuit, James Blassingame, a 17-year veteran of the force, and Sidney Hemby, who has served as a Capitol Police officer for 11 years, quote Trump's words leading up to the riot, including Trump's baseless claims of voter fraud and his assertion that Democrats were "trying to steal" the election.

The suit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., demands an award of at least $75,000 for each officer for each of the five alleged counts against Trump, as well as punitive damages and costs associated with the litigation. The counts include directing assault and battery, aiding and abetting assault and battery, directing intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violating D.C. statutes against incitement of a riot and disorderly conduct.

"Trump incited the bloody Capitol insurrection from nothing more than selfish reasons, perpetuated by the bullshit he'd been shoveling since he lost a fair election the previous November."

-John Boehner, former House Republicans majority leader

It's going to be a rough 4 years for everyone, race baiting clowns are in charge.

Violence makes shit happen, it is also the supreme authority from which all other authority is derived. ;)

Pence begged Pentagon to ‘clear the Capitol’ as he hunkered down during insurrection

On Saturday, the Associated Press revealed new details about the role of former Vice President Mike Pence in trying to contain the Capitol riot on January 6.

"From a secure room in the Capitol on Jan. 6, as rioters pummeled police and vandalized the building, Vice President Mike Pence tried to assert control. In an urgent phone call to the acting defense secretary, he issued a startling demand," said the report. "'Clear the Capitol,' Pence said."

"At 4:08 p.m. on Jan. 6, as the rioters roamed the Capitol and after they had menacingly called out for Pelosi, D-Calif., and yelled for Pence to be hanged, the vice president was in a secure location, phoning Christopher Miller, the acting defense secretary, and demanding answers," said the report. "Pence's call to Miller lasted only a minute. Pence said the Capitol was not secure and he asked military leaders for a deadline for securing the building, according to the document. By this point it had already been two hours since the mob overwhelmed Capitol Police unprepared for an insurrection."

Former President Donald Trump had by this point fallen out with Pence, furious that he was unable to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Other reports indicated that Trump himself was reluctant to allow the National Guard to respond to the invasion.

So, Tucker Carlson is out there, pushing the idea that the Democratic Party is trying to replace white voters in America with dark-skinned voters from African, Middle Eastern, South American and Asian nations.

This is EXACTLY the sort of propaganda that incited white people to commit violent crimes against Latinos, African Americans and other people of color in the U.S.A.

Two days ago, the Anti-Defamation League sent a letter to Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott calling for Carlson to be fired after his blatantly racist and inflammatory remarks on primetime television.

While expressing concerns about Carlson's remarks, Greenblatt insisted that Carlson's "rhetoric was not just a dog whistle to racists — it was a bullhorn."

And here on Lit, that was reported as "ADL admits whites existing is what's meant by white supremacy". Go figure.

Wow. That's fucked up.

The right-wingers aren't even willing to make the most basic attempt at having an honest discussion.

I've come to believe they honestly aren't seeing what's really there. I don't see how else you could explain the way they always claim progressives said things that are completely different from what we really said.
