What Are You Listening To Now? 6.0

Amphlett had serious attitude. Loved her.

Speaking of looks. Once they were hitting big time their label strongly requested at their expense that she correct her over bite.

"Fuck you" was her response.

Which is the only right answer. The moment you agree to anything the label wants, you'll end up in a Bangles situation.

Not sure rock and roll ever got better than "Boys In Town".

That was a great one.

I always get annoyed when Divinyls are categorized as a one hit wonder band. They had internationally (they were originally Australian) a bunch of hits enough to make the Collections album I was playing earlier.

Have a great night Meta!

Let's not forget Pleasure and Pain. Definitely not a one-hit wonder here.

Absolutely!

Like Sweet, no one ever really thinks of Divinyls as a successful band, but they had a bunch of recognizable hits.

No one outside Australia, perhaps. They were definitely well recognised here though. Chrissy Amphlett has a street named for her in my town!

Take care Bramble, be safe and well

And you!

I did not know that. That is so cool.

I always feel bad how she, Patty Donohue (Waitresses), and Laura Branigan died so young and such lousy deaths. I feel the rock and roll world got robbed badly.

Divinyls were big in the U.S. in the late 80s. But just for that one album, with that great fishnet cover of Chrissy touching herself. I'd heard a couple singles before, and as good as their eponymous album was, I never thought they exceeded "Boys In Town", which I thought (and still think) was brilliant.

(Early 90s, I think - their self-titled album came out in 1991, and they were on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie soundtrack in 1992 for what that's worth.)

It's a good song, and really evocative of that kind of frustrated-bored-adolescent Australian country town experience. Amphlett grew up in Geelong, which wasn't a small town but definitely wasn't the big city either. It's a nice place to visit these days but I suspect it would have been pretty dire for a bright and independent-minded young lady in the 1970s.
