Judge tosses Nunes' libel suit against CNN

The case sought $435 million over a report that then-chair of House Intelligence Committee dug for Ukraine dirt on Biden.

A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit Rep. Devin Nunes filed in 2019 claiming he was libeled by CNN in reports alleging he was involved in an effort to dig up Ukraine-related dirt on Joe Biden.

In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain granted the news network’s motion to dismiss the suit, which sought a whopping $435 million in damages.

CNN’s story asserted that a witness was prepared to testify that Nunes, then-chair of the House Intelligence Committee and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, met with former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin in Vienna in 2018 to gather information that might be politically damaging to Biden.

Nunes adamantly denied the allegation and named CNN in a flurry of lawsuits he filed against news organizations in 2019.

Trump Ally Erik Prince Supplied Arms, Mercenaries For Planned Libya Coup: Report

The U.N. finds Trump endorsed a strongman in Libya four days after Prince made a pitch to the militia boss for an $80 million mercenary op, the N.Y. Times reports.

Staunch Donald Trump supporter and ally Erik Prince allegedly supplied weapons, mercenaries and aircraft to a Libyan militia commander for a plot to overthrow the internationally backed Libyan government, according to a United Nations investigation, The New York Times reported Friday.

The confidential report obtained by the Times accused Prince, founder of the private military company Blackwater, which has changed its name to Academi, of violating a United Nations arms embargo on Libya by deploying foreign mercenaries, armed with aircraft and gunboats, to eastern Libya in 2019 amid heavy fighting.

Part of the plan was to use a mercenary hit squad to kill Libyan military commanders, according to the Times.

Eastern Libya is now controlled by Khalifa Haftar, the commander Prince agreed to support, according to the U.N. report. Trump publicly endorsed Haftar in April 2019, four days after Prince made his pitch to the strongman for his $80 million Libyan operation, the Times reported.

The 121-page report on Prince, a former Navy SEAL and brother of Betsy DeVos, Trump’s education secretary, was reportedly delivered Thursday to the U.N. Security Council for possible further action.

Guards for Prince’s former Blackwater security company were convicted of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in an unprovoked ambush in 2007. Just before he left office, Trump pardoned four men serving time for the massacre.

AOC raises nearly $5 million in Texas relief efforts

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had amassed $4.7 million in her fundraising efforts to help Texans hard hit by last week's winter storm as of Sunday evening, her press secretary Ivet Contreras confirmed to CNN.

The New York Democrat launched her fundraiser Thursday after extreme cold weather, ice and snow caused the power grid managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to fail -- leading to rolling blackouts and a boil-water advisory for nearly half of Texas. The fundraiser had hit $1 million by Thursday evening. The next day, Ocasio-Cortez said that donation figures had risen to $2 million, and she announced she would visit the state.

The congresswoman's efforts come as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a political adversary, faces backlash -- including from members of his own party -- for flying to Cancun, Mexico, last week as many of his constituents were left without power or water. To raise money, Ocasio-Cortez is using Act Blue, a Democratic fundraising tool, that helps her build an email listserv as she receives donations.

On Friday, the congresswoman said she would fly to Houston to join Democratic Texas Rep. Sylvia Garcia to distribute supplies. While in Texas, the progressive lawmaker and other Democrats visited food distribution centers, water delivery sites and toured the damage left behind from an unprecedented storm.

Ocasio-Cortez, alongside Garcia and Texas Rep. Al Green, said Saturday that she wanted to work to get assistance to Texans after volunteering at the Houston Food Bank and touring the home of a family who was affected by the winter storm.

"It's one thing to read about what's going on but it's another thing entirely to see the damage for ourselves," she said. "The message in Washington is let's not let people get caught up in a bunch of red tape. Let's try to get this assistance out the door as much as people need and as quickly as we can."
