What Are You Listening To Now? 6.0

Spock's Beard : Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep

Gotta love these guys! And this is probably my favorite, since "Snow". 'Course, it's very different from Snow!

Atlantean Kodex : The Course of Empire

Meh-

Heretic! If you want epic metal "Meh", go and listen to Manowar's "Warriors Of The World" album. Or anything of theirs from "Triumph Of Steel" onwards. These guys define "contact embarrassment" for me. :)
A shame, because their early works are timeless classics even a totally botched mix like on "Into Glory Ride" can't tarnish.

Okay, okay, okay! I'll spin it again, and will listen more carefully.

Heretic.

Sheesh.

Mumble grumble!

LOL

Kidding - it was playing in the background while I was working. I'll spin it again and will concentrate more closely...

Devin Townsend : Empath

Simply one of the best albums in the last 5 years, IMO!

No worries - I understand Atlantean Kodex can be a hit-or-miss thing for some. Even I find their high-concept, ultra-serious approach to heavy metal a bit tiring at times. Still, there are few bands who can pull off this style of music like they do. You have to come at them with the same mindset as if you were to dive into the Lord Of The Rings books - long-form epics which need a bit of time. If you want the quick and easy-to-digest version, give Eternal Champion a whirl. They are much less high-brow and get to the point much, much quicker.

You should know me enough by now to realize when I'm really, righteously angry and when not. This time, I wasn't. :)

On that note:
Megaton Sword - Blood Hails Steel... Steel Hails Fire

Yeah, no punches pulled. Metal up to 11. :)

IQ : Resistance

You can't easily go wrong with these guys besides their one flub "Nomzamo" (IMHO).

This isn't their best, but it's a good listen.

Psychosomatic

Immortal Guardian

First of many new releases today. I have never heard of this power metal band.

Always my gut reaction is to go "Awwwww, they can play super fast; aren't they cuuuuutttee." Further listening the guitarist, Gabriel Guardian, isn't bad, just not Nuno Betancourt or Paul Gilbert by any stretch, but honestly who is.

As for the singer, Carlos Zema, he reminds me of Ronnie James Dio which is certainly a good thing but the more I hear the more I wish it was Ronnie James instead.

The rhythm section of Justin Piedimonte on drums and Joshua Lopez on bass, not bad but very meh.

Will I buy this? Probably because I am such a music whore and it really isn't bad. While I play it a lot? Nope.

Oh, yeah the cover with the semi nekkid girl totally screams Blind_Justice.

Reaching

Compile

Debut album by this Israeli Band. Me likey quite a bit. The keyboardist, William Winterman, is quite good, and I really like the singer, Eden Abuhav, a lot. They are described as power metal/rock, but I feel it is not much on the power metal but definitely well done rock. This will be played often in the near future.

Third Impression

3.2

Okay, I need some help here with this one. I have a very, very bad gut reaction, but I have absolutely nothing to base it on.

Back in the eighties Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer wanted to revive ELP but Greg Lake wanted nothing to do with it. The boys found a very talented multi instrumentalist singer by the name of Robert Berry and so 3 was born. I absolutely LOVED 3. I thought the album was incredibly and the live show was very impressive. Sadly after one album and tour they disbanded.

A couple of years ago Berry got together with Emerson to revive Three. Palmer was iffy. I was beyond excited. Well, we lost Emerson and I thought all hopes for a new 3 with his death. Berry decided to release the material he created with Emerson as a tribute to him. In this variation Berry plays everything and calls the band 3.2.

Definitely you can hear Emerson in the songs and the new album especially sounds every bit as great as the original 3 which says a lot about Berry's talent.

My problem: post 3 Emerson and Palmer went on to do great things; Berry not so much and I don't know why. I just get the feeling that Berry is taking advantage of the situation and milking Emerson for his own glory. Now, again I have absolutely nothing to substantiate this.

I really need to stop thinking and just enjoy the music which is fantastic.

Arc of Life's eponymous first album

Okay this is the big new prog album release of the week. Members of Yes and Circa team up with phenomenal keyboardist Dave Kerzner. They deliberately wanted to stay true to their Yes roots, but this is still a very different band.

Very melodic prog, complex in composition but very accessible. They do take advantage of having four strong singers (Billy Sherwood, Jon Davidson, Jimmy Haun and Kerzner) with their complex harmonies.

It sounded just as I expected it to sound with a lot of Sherwood influence. I was hoping for more influence from Kerzner who has a very distinct Pink Floyd feel to his music, but in the end this is a great new prog album IMHO and will be getting a pretty steady playing rotation from me.

Still on an epic Epic Metal bender.

Glacier - Passage of Time

This more Epic-adjacent than "true gospel", but still a fun listen. The band released a few demos and a single EP in the late '80s and fell off the Earth afterwards until they were revived in 2017 (I think). This is technically their debut album and they play a very nice, European style of Heavy Metal with absolutely killer guitar solos and harmonies.

Empath

Devin Townsend

This is all Haulover's fault

Love it!!

I bought tickets to see his live show early last year. The tour was "postponed" due to Covid just 2 days before it came to my area. I still have 2 tickets, worth several hundred dollars.

In theory, the tour will resume at some point in the future. We'll see-
