But in the end, enough of these violent fanatics will be arrested or killed to once again pull the plug on violence as a tool for societal change. Social media platforms make it easier to both start a violent movement and to identify its leaders, so it is a relatively new double-edged sword.

A new administration that clearly opposes violent protest of any type, and does not selectively coddle certain elements as has the Trump administration, will be a very good first step. Biden has made it clear that he opposes all sources of violent protest.

Social media platforms will have to do the same, banning all types of advocacy for violence, and aiding law enforcement authorities in tracking those who do advocate for violent protest or violent revolution.
