You mean the doctor who isn’t an expert on infectious diseases? I happen to know an excellent surgeon who might have an opinion or two on managing a pandemic, maybe we should hear their ideas? Or maybe we should listen to the leading expert on infectious diseases; someone who has served under six different presidents (Republicans and Democrats)? This virus is going to take its course and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Wearing a mask provides nothing more that a false sense of security and in many cases causes more harm than good. Ask anyone in the military their opinion of wearing a cloth mask in an attempt to protect from an extremely transmissible pathogen. It's comical. If people refuse to follow to the letter the proper protocol for self protection then its just a matter of time before you become infected. You are right, that’s a pretty obvious answer. The pandemic got way out of control, and the Republicans just gave up. Mark Meadows said that himself. An infectious disease outbreak acts much like a wildfire: address it early while its small and its easily contained and ultimately put out, but if your early efforts aren’t sufficient enough and it grows too big it can even jump major containment lines, and it requires much more drastic measures to contain and extinguish it.

Had a lot more people worn masks when first advised, had we had the kinds of testing and tracing that we could and should have, had people not gathered in large indoor arenas and underground parties, etc etc etc... we would be looking at a totally different situation. But unfortunately, we are still responding about 6 months behind the curve. Taking a look at where the infections are spreading they are almost all from gatherings of unmasked people. Pretty obvious stuff really, and most people have been saying as much for months.

Instead he chose to use it as an opportunity to further divide and define this as a political statement. “Those who wear masks and go on about this imaginary pandemic are just trying to undermine his re-election campaign”.
