An odd thing I noticed.

I was reading a new story today, ie it had just been published. When I got to the end of the story I noticed the "counters" at the end. They read;

Comments, 0

Views, 0

Favourites, 10

So had some people favoured the story without reading it or do the counters not record correctly, possibly some time lag between the different counter types ?

Shel.

Probably. But Manu has been rewriting things like crazy and maybe something got left behind in the old code. Who know. Those number are correct on you author's control panel though.

Yes, I have quite a few readers just hitting the favorite story button and not either voting or commenting. From their perspective they probably think doing more than one is unnecessary even though they really liked the story.

Could also be people bookmarking it to read later, although it's more likely just counter lag.

Yes, I have posters marking twenty or more at a time (twice already this month). I assume those are just setting up a reading file.

Is there a way to favorite a story without opening it? I don't know of any. The site should count a view each time the story is opened, so if the numbers are in step views should always exceed favorites.

I think there's mostly just a difference in when or how often the numbers are updated. In this case, favorites was updated before views.

EDIT: I just checked the story at the top of the Romance hub. The hub shows 3.6k views, 16 favorites (and 16 lists), and 6 comments. The stats box on the new story page initially showed the same numbers, then in a split second it redrew and showed 3k views, 14 favorites and no comments

The stats aren't updated homogeneously.

I don't think there's a way to favorite a story without opening at least the last page of it. That said, I don't understand the relevance of your post to anything asked or answered here.

Legions of readers have no idea what significance the votes have, let alone the value of a comment. I'm not a bit surprised when they do this.

Right. Neither am I. The site just isn't set up to meet the expectations of authors on the need/desire for feedback. That's just the way it is.
