So.

Put a bunch of people who want to withdraw from Afghanistan and Iraq into DoD leadership positions.

Announce you’re withdrawing troops at the advice of the people in DoD leadership positions.

Leave shaky allies on their own.

That about it?

Well, I do think leaving Afghanistan is long overdue. I don't think really have allies in Afghanistan.

There are so many geopolitical nexuses involving Afghanistan( opium production, terrorist training , oil pipeline corridor, trade routes, etc) that decisions involving US policy relating to that hotly contested country should not be made in a rash or haphazard way. Just like invading Iraq shouldn't have been done in a rash and haphazard way.

It is certainly fair to question the motives of a desperate lame duck president with ties to Russia.

I was in on the analysis of Afghanistan policy quite long enough to have reached the conclusion--as have others trying to play there--that it is quicksand best avoided altogether.

As long as Pakistan gives refuge to the Taliban we need to be getting our ass out.

It's a quagmire to be sure, but abandoning it to those who would exploit its location and "resources" for purposes that would continue to imperil the health and safety world???

It isn't a decision that should be made by a compromised "commander in chief".

Pakistan does not do so. You assume that Pakistan has control of its own territory they do not and never have fully controlled their own tribal areas, let alone any part of Afghanistan. (And for that matter the Pakistan government's control of its own army is dubious at best.)

Time to leave. Most minor participating countries have their own reasons to leave, Tiny Denmark for example has the highest proportion of fatalities of any allied nation serving there. For Australia it has become a national embarrassment mainly due to fatalities, but also because our soldiers propensity to 'dispose' of unwanted prisoners has become a major scandal.

There are a million + Hazara refugees in Iran and even more of various ethnicities in Pakistan. There is a reasonable chance that leaving will cause both of those nations major headaches dealing with those refugees.

And leaving now might just help Trump play the hero as he finally exits - a small price to pay. ;)
