I'm really hoping to find some plausible explanation beyond "they're all a bunch of racists". But so far, I can't.

For a lot, yes.
but he also gained in blacks and latinos, particularly males. I can't see any explanation for that than being attracted to his faux strongman bullshit.
This entire situation.
70 + Million assholes voted for the orange demon of hate and division?

The answer is that he tells the lies that people want to hear.

Doesn't seem that baffling to me. Just look at it from the perspective of the African American voters. Donald Trump has said some very racist shit, but Biden's the author of the Crime Bill that has disproportionate number of black men locked away in prisons across america for non-violent drug offenses, Biden's bragged in the past how he was against bussing and how he was buddy buddy with segregationist senators. From their perspective either way they were voting for an old white racist. At least with Trump they could vote for the one that is up front and honest about being a racist.

Trump, for not being a Republican (he never was, he's an opportunist) made inroads into all sorts of traditional Democrat demographics. What I wonder is, now that he is being ushered out, are the Republicans even a little bit competent to maintain those gains?
i wouldn't be surprised if some desperate fools voted for him because they desperately hoped he'd come through on the stimulus bribe offer.
Good question. I would say no. Republicans' strength has always been playing to their base's wants and desires (Something I wish the democrats would learn from) what they want and what these new voters want are too different to keep them in the tent for too much longer. Most other republicans not named Trump won't know how to straddle that fence to placate both the base and these new voters.
Post-election there’s little to no political capital to be gained from a stimulus package.
Don’t hold your breath on it.
