he's pleaded not guilty and is on a million dollar bail, but his partner in crime has accepted responsibility for his part and isn't likely to be indicted:
Smith, of Vista Equity Partners, accepted responsibility for his role in the alleged tax evasion scheme and agreed to a non-prosecution agreement, officials said. Vista Equity Partners declined to comment.

Officials say Smith, 57, hid money in offshore accounts in Belize and Nevis. Smith used his untaxed income to buy a vacation home in Sonoma, ski properties in the French Alps and to make charitable donations including the maintenance of a home in Colorado for inner city children and wounded veterans, authorities said. As part of a settlement with the Justice Department, Smith will pay $139 million in taxes and penalties, abandon his $182 million protective refund claim and pay interest, but will avoid prosecution.
now i'm not saying brockman should be getting off with paying fines and a slap onthe wrist; i AM saying that these guys all too often get away with this shit (this has been going on for an alleged 20 YEARS!) by buying themselves out of it instead of having to serve time in prison like any regular person would.

and isn't it nice to see how this same sort of person so often sets up some sort of charitable outlet that enhances their reputation for altruism amongst those who don't know about their criminal activities?

he sounds like presidential material!

This will be moved to the "politics" forum even though it isn't politics because Laurel edited the description of the politics board to include "all current events". So basically...the GB is now nothing but a pic posting site. Enjoy.

Brockman's wife had launched a range of knitting patterns so it is still GB material

Like all my knitting attempts

Well she isn't very good at knitting that's for sure. Look at how crooked that hem is as it hangs on that hanger. Wow. Looks like I made it. (Yes, my grandmother taught me to knit and crochet)

Well, when it comes to taxes it is quite proven that you can collect only that much. Rise them over the threshold and revenue will go down because nobody would pay. Said threshold may vary from place to place by cultural norms, historical circumstances, enforcement effectiveness, mean income and other factors, but never ever anywhere all supposedly due taxes are collected.

That said, this guy does sound like a bit overtaken by by pure greed at some point.

i don't doubt that there are plenty of others just like him out there; they got away with it for so long it was their normal.

We're not talking regular tax payers, who already pay too much but fuckers like Butters pointed to who pay huge amounts to smug rich lawyers to defraud ordinary people. Hence the disparity we see 90% v 10% wealth.

Stop sucking your teeth about something that is irrelevant

Well, I have worked in a 50+ person office formally split in a dozen "microenterprises" to avoid social tax, all paying minimum wage (to programmers and artists including) with the rest split by direct cash and part processed to debit cards through offshore banking accounts. I have paid cash for construction (including quite large projects) and other work getting discounts *accidentally* matching the tax row, etc, etc, etc. There was a time here literally nobody paid literally any tax. Yes, I'm not from USA; and that's mostly history.

The point? It's really naive to think *creative* tax management is something extraordinary in business. Law is an obstacle to overcome. How much of it can safely be done, yes, that's the battlefield.

A reasonable way to reduce this is to reduce the Tax Code. Articles on it claim somewhere between 2,600 and 4,000 pages.

Probably. It helps if it makes sense and has some degree of transparency. Also, wise tax law would anticipate what the secondary effects of mass evasion will be.
