While I'm enjoying the karma of Trump's Covid diagnosis, I can't help but wonder what the secret service's responsibility is for keeping the president and the public safe from his stupidity.

In my line of work there are protocols in place for dealing with people who present a danger to themselves or others. Trump did both by exposing himself and others to Covid at his rallies and at other events. There must be some way the secret service can insist that the president not conduct those types of events under peril of being declared unfit for office. This would most likely involve invoking the 25th amendment, but so what. If ever there was a time for the secret service director to impose limits on a presidents activities, the Covid pandemic was definitely it.

Someone needed to save Trump from himself, and the country along with him.

This seems like an epic failure of the current system.

SAD!!!

There are limits to what the Secret Service can do in saying "no" to what the president wants to do, and they work on physical, not health safety. I don't think they've had to respond to anyone as stupid as Trump on health safety. He's undermined simply every area of government an enforcement unit like the Secret Service could get enough of a handle on to override him on anything. And that includes any backing by the Justice Department.

I did a little reading on it, and it seems like the secret service can override the president at times. Wouldn't a pandemic seem like a good time to do it???

If the secret service had insisted that it was too dangerous for Trump to expose himself and others, someone would have had to back down. If the secret service had got Trump to back down it would have sent a message to the country. If Trump had refused to back down, and the secret service made it known that they objected, it would have sent a message to the country.

Someone needed to stand up to the president, but just like everyone else in his administration, it seems like the secret service didn't have the courage to do so.

SAD!!!

Did I mention that Trump has managed to cripple most of government functioning, especially where it concerns curbing him on anything?

.
Yeah, I seem to recall you mentioning that...

I was furious when Fauci, Birx, and Redfield seemed to cave to his narrative, and I was beyond furious when Barr corrupted the DOJ for him. That's what got me to thinking about who else could have reigned him in. The secret service can't be excused for their dereliction of duty.

And, no, I don't think that protecting anyone against a pandemic is in the brief of the Secret Service. Maybe you can find something in their brief that would indicates they are. I think they are there for external physical threats, not stupid suicide attempts.

The secret service can't be excused for their dereliction of duty.

Ultimately the Secret Service takes their orders from the President, so giving him an excuse on this one is absurd.

Whilst you are considering this issue I will give you a challenge. Name a single government institution - just one, whose role, competence and prestige has been enhanced by this administration. Just one. ;)

I would like to offer impeached president trump my best wishes. I hope he can stay positive.

Definitely not giving him an excuse, but if the president said he wanted to swim in an alligator infested river, I'm guessing the secret service could and would say no. I don't see Covid as being that different. It was quite likely that Trump was going to get it if he was allowed to keep conducting himself like he was immune to the disease. When you factor int the risk to other members of his cabinet, his recklessness was borderline certifiable. I can't imagine someone wouldn't have told him his actions were jeopardizing national security, and that it could be grounds for removing him from office. Then again, maybe they hoped he would get Covid and die.

Bush senior had 1, Bill Clinton 2, Bush Junior 2, Obama 3 and Trump - 6 so far in less than one term.

Security advisors to this President who say 'no' do not seem to last too long. ;)

It looks like the super spreader event was the weekend SCOTUS luncheon.

Republican greed for power ensured there was no stopping that.

You are NOT going to hear of the security protocols for the POTUS.

Considering the times we live in and have for the last one hundred years or so, I am sure they are on the look out for Gases, Radiation & Poisons and naturally as much as possible Germs.

I have heard fist hand reports of POTUS making people, in private move to the other end of a couch to maintain a safe distance.

The thing is with this Covid 19,as with a hell of a lot of other crap out there, it only takes one person to forget once about a mask, hands washing or distance.

Even with perfect protocols in place I am surprised he hasn't caught it before now with all that he has to do.

If this was smallpox we all would be fucked!

So you might want to lighten up a little bit there, Francis!

^^^ A huge load of crap from a cult follower.

Another huge load of crap is this recent media narrative about "If the most protected person in America can get the virus, any of us can." Bullshit.

Most people in America have way more sense than the Trump family cult. They would never defy the Cleveland Clinic about wearing masks and protecting other guests at the recent debate. They would never pack people together in the Rose Garden and at political rallies. They would never encourage their visitors NOT to wear a mask.

Trump got COVID because he is a science-denying idiot.

And the OTHER millions and millions of people oh wise one?

Doofus, we are talking about an idiot who got the virus because he believed the virus was a hoax, and believed that following public health protocols was a sign of weakness.

And yeah, leadership like that contributes to the fact that so many other people ignored the public health protocols. Many died needlessly because of mixed messages coming from idiotic leaders.

But beyond that, many people contracted the disease because they did not even have access to masks and proper sanitation.

Trump had access to the the information and the best materials available. He just chose to actively dismiss science, as did most of his cult followers. Selfishness and stupidity.

So Santa Covid has a naughty and nice list?

OK then!
