If you put aside the religious mumbo jumbo for a moment it is worth remembering that the present pope is the only leader of any major faith whose initial training was as a scientist.

The Vatican has been moving away from the literal interpretation of the bible for some time now, and has basically ceded the stage to science when it comes to environmental issues and health issues.

They're moving away from magical thinking and miracles.

Catholics to most Christens is like Trump to most Republicans.

Certainly not the way we would do things but seems to be mostly on our side and has good intensions and does try to keep their promises...

The Catholic church in fact has never boxed itself into the corner of literalist interpretation like the fundamentalist Protestants have. Even the Protestant Episcopalians tied themselves in knots in the early days following the publication of Darwin's work. The Catholics had prior to Darwin, realized that the geologists like Lamark had already shown the seven day cycle was wrong and in any case from the time of the early church fathers the creation story had always been treated allegorically.

The RC church however, is not moving away from miracles or magical teaching. Miracles still figure large in their traditions and whilst they comfortably accommodate Darwin in his consideration of evolution of the body, they will not tolerate any suggestion that evolution has anything to do with the soul. After 160 years of Darwin the RC church has been pretty consistent and has never issued a defined teaching on Evolution, believing it to be quite conformable with their view of the Bible.

As a small point of interest, St Augustine back in the 5th century believed creation was instantaneous and the biblical story allegorical, so he could probably have handled the Big Bang Theory as well.
