It is something vital to our Republic, but between President Trump refusing to commit to accepting the outcome of this election if it goes against him, and the Democrats for years refusing to accept the outcome of the 2016 election, it's just growing closer and closer to becoming a thing of the past. That is very dangerous and has only happened once more in our history: 1860.

I don't think that anyone who has read the history of the subsequent war that followed that election and really seen the parallels would fail to see the perils for this Republic. If either side doesn't accept the outcome, what's to stop another secession, an uprising, or ultimately, a second civil war?

I think that the two parties need to find a way to both oppose when necessary and cooperate when possible, but most of all, to accept the will of the American people and the rule of law. A refusal by either party to accept the outcome of this election could well spell catastrophe, not only for America, but for the world.

You might look at 1876 as well....

Okay, fair point, but that was peacefully, if rather corruptly, resolved. It had some catastrophic results in terms of ending Reconstruction, sad to say. And it led to some real doubts of the legitimacy of the Presidency for the first time on a substantive basis.

As I recall, Democrats labeled Hayes "Rutherfraud" Hayes for years afterwards. If Hayes had sought re-election (he conveniently only believed in one-term Presidents), he'd have lost badly.

I have heard of rumours of the rise of a Electoral Commission again, if.....

I think either of those outcomes could occur again though after this election.

I don't see any resolution. We're on the cusp of a civil war.

.

Remind me again how the democrats didn't accept Trump being president???

I remember Trump doing everything in his power to force them to impeach him, but I didn't see legal challenges to the electoral college despite Trump losing the popular vote by 3 million votes.

Now Trump is doing everything in his power to force the democrats to impeach him again.

I don't know who the people are that are pushing so hard for an obvious scumbag, but America and the world is going to suffer if Trump is re-elected.

I'm guessing you're a Russian troll, which is fine, because Russia is going to get fucked as well.

Enjoy.

Trump could die of natural causes before the election. That would throw a huge amount of water on the fire that is smouldering.

Sad to say, that would only put an end to the biggest and ugliest manifestation of all the hate and resentment that is still very much out there, and of which Trump is only a symptom. I really hope if Biden wins (as I am cautiously optimistic that he will), his administration puts a lot of effort into cracking down on right-wing violence and hate groups. The SCLM will scream in outrage along with the Republicans - I say let them!

Russian troll? Really? I've been here a lot longer than you. I criticized both parties, because frankly, both deserve to be criticized. Dems spent the last four years saying "Not My President" and implying that Trump wasn't lawfully elected. I can't stand the guy, but he is the lawfully, duly elected President of the United States. I voted for Clinton, but I accepted the outcome. Hillary didn't, despite her words.

People have kept pushing this RussiaGate business as a way of not accepting the outcome, too. I don't like Putin, either, but I don't think that a President who pulled out of the INF and the Iran Nuclear Deal, both positions that irk Putin, is exactly a puppet of the guy.

Use your common sense, if you have any.

This is the sort of McCarthyist, hysterical BS that exactly makes my point. I want Trump gone, but if he wins, his victory should be accepted this time. And he should be opposed when necessary. But not opposition for its own sake. But on the merits.

And if he loses, as I hope that he does, I still hope that he changes his course and accepts the will of the American People and the demands of the Constitution.

I'm 43 years of age. I've been a Republican, a Democrat, and a Libertarian. I'm an independent now. I'm growing sick and tired of this sideshow. It's sickening and I'm done with it. I just hope that more independents like me decide to ditch the two major parties someday soon and push for something different, something new, something better.

True

However I never said it would put out the embers.

What do you mean the Democrats didn't accept the outcome of the 2016 election? Who's been in the White House for three and a half years without a single Democrat trying to physically haul him out of there? Perhaps you don't understand the functional definition of "accept the outcome." Or the spin Trump is trying to put on that now.

Propagating conspiracy theories that came up inconclusive after two years and still believing them instead of admitting that they let cracks form in the blue wall is the sort of hysteria that I mean. Try harder to win by convincing people and earning votes. Maybe you don’t understand the functional definition of elections? I never wanted Trump, but I accepted the outcome. I didn’t waste time obsessed with McCarthyism.

And I opened up by condemning his rhetoric in case you forgot. Back to iggy you go.

Your premise, as stated, is flawed and obviously false--no Democrat has not let Trump be president--so I've lost interest in what you're posting on this. You can't really go anywhere useful from a false premise--and, in this case, a really cockeyed comparison. The Democrats didn't either say or do anything along the lines of not accepting the 2016 election results--that the Electoral College vote didn't decide it. Trump is doing just that--already--before there are any results. And he's doing everything he can to suppress the vote, which is the opposite of what the Democrats did in 2016 and are doing now.

Your premise is shit.

I don't see this escalating much more, unless the outgunned side starts buying stacks of guns.

Can you imagine the conspiracy theories from his whacked out followers if that were to happen?

Possibly. But it's quite obvious that Trump (and therefore you) sees himself as the outgunned side in a vote total, or he wouldn't be doing and saying what he is. You don't do everything you can to suppress the vote if you have confidence you have the votes.

I don't know who is buying, but guns sales are up big time. Reports of lots of first time buyers and ranges are training lots of folks. Ammo is flying off the shelves in popular calibres. Although it appears that ammo mfg's are keeping up with demand this time. AR/AK sales are up and lots of small gun companies are prospering.

You must not have have been paying attention.

Guns aren't much good against fire.

Trump was provoking and dividing long before he was president, and the results of his comments and actions were predictable.

If he get elected again under suspicious circumstances you better stock up on marshmallows.

Trump tells MAGA rally he won’t be ‘stupid’ enough for peaceful transition of power if he loses

President Donald Trump continued to spread debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election during a Friday night campaign rally in Virginia.

Trump argued that it was impossible for him to lose the election, thus concluding he would be “stupid” to hand over power peacefully should he lose.

“We not gonna lose this, except if they cheat,” Trump falsely claimed about the 2020 campaign, where he trails Joe Biden in national and battleground polling.

“That’s the only way we’re gonna lose is if there’s, uh, mischief,” he argued. “And it will have to be on a big scale.”

“And we do want a very friendly transition, but we don’t want to be cheated and be stupid and say, ‘oh, let’s transit — we’ll go and we’ll do a transition’ and we know that there were thousands and thousands of ballots that made the difference through cheating,” he said, repeating the debunked conspiracy theories.

There ya go!:)

You think the Trump/Russia investigations were inconclusive.???

Wow.

You believe Putin gives a fuck about the INF or the Iran deal???

Wow.

You think that because you joined in July 2019 that proves you're not a Russian troll???

Wow.

You think because you trash both parties that proves you're not Russian troll???

Wow

If it valks like a Russian troll and it talks like a Russian troll...........

And if you're not a Russian troll then you deserve to be ridiculed, because you seem to think that people oppose Trump for no apparent reason.

GTFO

Maybe Trump will die on the toilet, and his fans will refuse to believe he’s really gone, and think he was taken by aliens or living incognito in Memphis.

"Wow, wow, wow" -- That's one hell of a defense. LOUD SARCASM beats a rational argument any day of the week, doesn't it?

I mean, all those "wows" doesn't prove that SevMax just made you look like an idiot.

Oh, and, shuddup, Rory.

Whatever, moron. If you think that I have only been with Lit since last year, you haven’t been paying attention. Iggy time for you.

I don't remember what caused the account change (I think he may have left in a huff at some point and evaporated his old account), but SeverMax has been around for a very long time. He was a total libertarian previously, claiming later to becoming elsewise. I've never quite figured out what elsewise included. I certainly don't think I've ever seen him express pro-Russian leanings.
