WHile people are ignoring Climate Change, it is happening and has real consequences!

Antarctica’s glacier-damming ice shelves at risk

More than half the ice shelves ringing Antarctica that prevent huge glaciers from sliding into the ocean and lifting sea levels are at risk of crumbling due to climate change, researchers said Wednesday.

Melt water running into deep fissures caused by warming air is undermining the structural integrity of these natural barricades, they reported in Nature.

“If the ice shelves fill up with melt water, things can happen very quickly,” said co-author Jonathan Kingslake, a glaciologist at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Scientists are especially concerned about the weakened state of ice shelves holding back West Antarctica’s Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers which could, if destabilised, raise global oceans by more than three meters.

Goodbye Miami!

Polar bear kills man in Arctic Svalbard

A polar bear has killed a Dutch man on Norway’s Arctic Svalbard archipelago, local officials said Friday, the sixth fatal attack in almost 50 years in the region.

According to experts, the shrinking icecap has reduced the polar bears’ preferred seal hunting grounds, pushing them to approach populated areas in their search for food.

The incident took place overnight in a camping area near Svalbard’s main town of Longyearbyen, located 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) from the North Pole.

The 38-year-old victim was found seriously injured in his tent and died shortly afterwards, the local governor’s office said in a statement. He had been working at the campsite, according to the local Svalbardposte newspaper.

In Svalbard, which is also known as Spitzberg, people are advised to carry a weapon when outside urban areas.

Trump Scoffs at Plea to Take Climate Change Seriously Amid Fires, Mocks Science Instead

DONALD TRUMP LAUGHED during a briefing on the deadly wildfires in California on Monday, refusing to take seriously the scientific consensus that climate change is a major factor in the blazes currently making it hard to breathe along the entire west coast of the United States.

In a tense exchange at an air base used by firefighters in Sacramento, the president scoffed at an impassioned plea from California’s natural resources secretary, Wade Crowfoot, “to really recognize the changing climate and what it means to our forests.”

“That science is going to be key,” Crowfoot told Trump, “because if we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think it’s all about vegetation management, we’re not going to succeed together protecting Californians.”

“It’ll start getting cooler,” Trump replied with a smirk. “You just watch,” he added as at least one local official chuckled along with him.

When Crowfoot said, “I wish science agreed with you,” Trump brought the exchange to an end by saying, “Well, I don’t think science knows, actually,” and calling on Cal Fire chief Thom Porter to speak.

The laughter in the room that accompanied Trump’s dismissive tone was a reminder of how very rarely he is challenged or corrected by those around him — even when he is spectacularly, comically wrong.

New Climate Maps Show a Transformed United States

According to new data from the Rhodium Group analyzed by ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine, warming temperatures and changing rainfall will drive agriculture and temperate climates northward, while sea level rise will consume coastlines and dangerous levels of humidity will swamp the Mississippi River valley.

Taken with other recent research showing that the most habitable climate in North America will shift northward and the incidence of large fires will increase across the country, this suggests that the climate crisis will profoundly interrupt the way we live and farm in the United States. See how the North American places where humans have lived for thousands of years will shift and what changes are in store for your county.

Interesting maps showing the gradual reduction of agriculture productivity and sea level increases!

Jack...would you call the Obama's? They just bought ocean front property. While you're at it, will you call Al Gore? He owns a place on the coast.

Heck...while your on the phone...just call every wealthy liberal...they all have places on the coast.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS SO REAL....ALL LIBERALS IGNORE IT.
Is this supposed to convince us that climate change isn’t happening? Not very scientific.

There's complaining and there's doing. People in areas that are becoming uninhabitable can move or stay and become boiled frogs.

And the rest of you can let the fossil fuel industry ram your heads deeper in the sand

Yeah... the third world can move here! Great idea!!! Just thinking the US will be affected??

The gas companies fought like hell when lead was the problem in their product. Check that history before you listen to a corporation

The southwest US is becoming more arid while Mexico becomes more tropical. Heading south may be easier before the wall is done. Meanwhile, Japan is tremendously overpopulated and will probably lose a war with China this century. Refugees may go to Siberia, but Chinese immigrants are moving there now. Their vast fleet of ships may be rigged for one way trips to the US and Canada, since they would be lacking fuel then and riding currents.

I don't have much hope for action on fossil fuels, since many former environmentalists are now pushing nuclear power as they realize life without cheap energy will be a personal loss of luxuries and conveniences. Carter pushed energy conservation and was rejected by a solid majority of the nation.

One of the great ironies of this debate is that one might assume folks who label themselves "conservative" would strongly advocate for the conservation of our biosphere.

By so willingly following and parroting the anti-science partisans, be they corporations or politicians beholden to corporations, these so-called conservatives are actually pushing, or at the very least acquiescing, to an incredibly radical pathway -the destruction of our ecosystem.

That makes no sense. Nuclear power is not cheap energy, and solar and wind are free.

Nuclear has never been profitable and is orders of magnitude more dangerous than oil. That shows the level of desperation of activists discovering their hypocrisy. Free solar and wind energy are greenwashed excuses to avoid using less electricity. Mining, manufacturing, and shipping the parts and maintaining the infrastructure use more energy than they produce. We will eventually use solar and wind energy more, but with less conversion and transmission over miles of steel wire. The most practical and efficient use of solar energy is as heat, such as heating a water tank on the roof of a house, or a solar oven to cook food. A small windmill made of local wood or scrap metal may charge a car battery for one light in a farmhouse.

What the fuck do you know about it???

I am off grid, have been since 2006, I have an electric fridge and an electric freezer, washer, dryer, stove...everything that a conventionally powered home has.:D ( my total system cost is less than what my total energy bill would be to date if I was"hooked up" to the Grid, although to be honest, there is no Grid near me to connect too...)

The problem with renewable energy is trying to power the "Grid" with it. There in lies the problems. Renewable being used to power individual homes is completely manageable and affordable...now go fuck off with your idiotic ideas on just about everything...

If they don't use much and they are wealthy enough to pay the cost of all the gear up front.

Otherwise it's not even close to a viable option.

^^^Looks like someone is still living in the 1990s and assumes that everyone lives in Minnesota.

While you snoozing, the price of photovoltaics came down to the point that they were cheaper than paying for grid hook-up costs in many rural areas of the Sunbelt. And, many of us have both a grid connection for our shops or AC units, but depend on photovoltaics for evaporative cooling, refrigerators, lighting, computer/internet, well pumps, and our daily essentials. $5000 initial investment, and battery bank replacement comes out to average $50 per year.

Since my work with welders and big shop equipment is intermittent, I only pay the $20/month base fee for the grid connection.

During a grid power outage that lasts longer than a day, I feel a lot more secure than the people who are having to drive long distances to find a gas station that still has working pumps to refill their generator tanks.

WHile people are ignoring Climate Change, it is happening and has real consequences!

Ignoring public health measures to control COVID transmission is stupid, also.

Matter of fact, the U.S. is now regarded as one of the most stupid nations on planet Earth.
