My guess is celebrating religious holidays.
I might be wrong but rosh hashanah is usually followed by 10 days of repentance called the Days of Awe followed by Yom Kippur. These are considered the high holy days in Judaism.
Or not.

I imagine the Politics Board was created for that same reason and was apparently envisioned before the Lounge. It just looks like no one followed the board rules and kept posting politics on the regular board. I never even knew the Politics Board existed

When the Politics board was setup, it was in response to users complaining of the large number of political threads consistently filling the front page. In the "glory days" of the GeeBee, these threads were present, but were a clear minority.
Laurel decided to not make it mandatory at the time. Well, times change.
