The NFL's season-opening game between the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans drew disappointing TV ratings fueling continued questions about whether increased political activism in sports is driving fans away.

Preliminary Nielsen ratings show that 16.4 million people tuned in to the Thursday night primetime game, which is a 16% decrease from the number of people who watched last season's opener between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears.

So are we saying that a bunch of people who used to watch the NFL are against social justice?

.

If the OP thinks that a Kansas City vs Houston game is going to draw anywhere near the audience of a Green Bay vs Chicago game they must not know much about American football.

I'm guessing the OP is Russian.

I see what you did there comrade , well played.

On task in the spirt of the thread, we watched the first possession of each team and then turned the channel. There is far to many other things to watch on TV these days then to watch AFC football teams.

Even though both teams are quarterbacked by two of the best in the League?

Draftkings isn't Draftkings because popular interest in professional football is waning.

Nobody tunes into sports to watch a bunch of overpaid, empty-headed, primadonna's make political street theater.

People in general like to watch train wrecks , can't help themselves but to be looky lou's when it's a " controversy. Last year Television stopped showing the anthem being sung , this year it's going to be a teams and fan bases statement as to what they do to start the game.

Television will be there to stoke the flames and media be there will hype it , that's a givin. Play by play analyst will screw up , say the wrong thing and lose their jobs, sports radio will scream about stupid stuff and the sun will come up tommorow as excepted... At the end of the day , as far as the players go , fans will either buy their swag and support them or not. Everything else is noise ...........

**Draft kings is a orginaized crime syndicates dream come true.......just saying

No way are we going to acknowledge a black person's basic human dignity as they peacefully protest. Fuck them for getting us to even try!

There was no subterfuge "comrade". I was just pointing to the lack of common knowledge that any real American football fan would know.

The OP is clearly a Russian bot.

I can't for the life of me figure out why a Russian bot would want to infiltrate a thread on a erotica board. Or why they would want to in the first place. It's a international site , the OP could just be a college football fan , or a Russian college football fan. College football fans love razzing pro fans. I'm confused how the OP is Russian and not lets say a gator fan ?

But that's just me ,

People tune into a 3-hour game where they can't even see the players' faces just to rubber-neck? I find that unlikely.

Draftkings is tax revenue, and more people will watch games now that they can bet on them without having to go to the other side of the tracks. Or the Carib.

Your rubber neck scenario assumes the viewer wants or wanted to watch the whole game , mine is that viewers want to see what happens with the national anthem in the 2020 season during a pandemic. Most football fans of individual players watched them in college and already know what they look like. They are their fans. If they support them , they buy their jerseys aka football swag. If they don't support the individual player they don't buy their swag. Nothing more nothing less.

Vegas was a tax revenue source too. Gambling is addiction , organized crime feeds on addictions.

They are free to protest. I am free to be part of the 16 percent that watched the season opening game last year but did not bother this year.
I suspect more and more people who are not racists will get tired of being preached to and will turn away.

When does the NFL's TV contract come up for renewal?

In my opinion, the reason professional athletes are so well compensated is because of their ability to make their customers forget the trials and tribulations of their every day lives. All the breast beating they are currently presenting with their product is pure hypocrisy, and the fans despise it. I don't think it's wise to present a position in the context of their jobs. I think it would be wiser to do it on their own time. They have the freedom to do whatever they want, however, as do the customers. The customers are voting with their feet. The other danger is that this is a very bad time to alienate customers because the actual product is terrible this year with many stadia banning live fan attendance. In my community, their are no fans allowed and no tailgate parties allowed. Often, the actual game is completely irrelevant other than as an excuse to party. Fans are going to find some thing else to do.

End of 2022

Damn right, they go to trump rallies for that

I suspect you aren't a sports fan and never were.

You go to political rallies to engage in politics. You go to sports events to see the sport. Notice the difference?

The NFL, along with the others, seem to have forgotten what industry they're in and that industry is entertainment.

The ABSOLUTELY have forgotten what industry they're in. It is a minefield for the NFL to attempt to engage in reality, and they're finding that out. I did watch literally a couple of minutes of Thursday's game. It was awful, and i turned it off, like millions of others.

Did it affect the sport? You know that part that happens when the ref starts the game?

Who cares if Deplorables whine about NFL ratings? They are always whining about something, even when they control the Federal government and most of the state governments.

MAWA: Made America Whine Again.

When it's a new theater season and the production company treats the patrons like dirt and calls them horrible names before they arrive, then delays the start of the show for some vaudeville act no one wants to see, it's not that difficult to understand why people don't want to attend the opening gala. Or any of the other shows.

That the production company doesn't seem to grasp the logic behind WHY they're failing is also why the ratings are down 16%. And yet you, and they, are blaming the fans for it.

Zero rotten tomatoes.

I don't care what they do before the game. They can play Chop Sticks if they want. I watch to see the game. I go take a piss before kick off instead of bitch about whatever they are doing.
