So...I got a message on a facebook post from the university I went to. The pharmacy college faculty researchers are working on a vaccine for Covid-19. The post read:

Before the government approves any vaccine for widespread use, it needs to be proven safe and effective in three ever-larger trials on humans. Tens of thousands of volunteers are involved in Phase 3 trials that are based at least in part in the United States: some will get the vaccine against Covid-19 and others receive a placebo.

Would you volunteer for the study?

Sure. Matter of fact, I already did. Not sure it's the same study.

But, as a PSA - depending on your health care insurer/provider most of them run active "volunteer" slates. You can volunteer for any study they think you'll qualify for, based on the selection criteria.

There is usually a general screen (to set the baseline data) and then specific screens for specific criteria. Some of the studies pay token amounts, most offer free related exams and monitoring. Just a small way to help the advancement of science.

My favorite, based on just the sheer amusement factor, was a brain-wave study. I got to wear electrodes while I went through the day. My awesome take away "you have unusual brain activity". (Mostly related to the long term effects of several severe concussions over my life.)

My favorite drug test was a mood altering drug. After the first dose, it was obvious I wasn't in the placebo group. :)

Volunteer? Absolutely. Would I have worried? Of course, anyone with a brain would be.

Dan Patrick wants us to volunteer to throw ourselves on the fire so some rich SOB can make more money. That's fucked and it ain't gunna happen with me. But to do so for a cause like finding a workable vaccine, possibly saving countless lives both rich and poor, that's something to throw yourself on the fire for. It's all about the reason to put yourself in danger.

Comshaw

The commercial isn't lying though. :D One of the medications I am on has a side effect of death.

That's the worst! I hate it when that happens.

On a positive note- cheating death its due is always a rush.

For the vaccine? No.

But I am being followed/studied by the medical hospital and university for Covid research.

Make sure that they provide coverage for any medical care resulting from adverse effects. And interment costs.

It appears from the first post that this is a stage 3 trial, in which case there is not so much to worry about and you might be protected well ahead of the general public. It might be worth remembering that even if you did get the vaccine it is likely to be ineffective for some subjects, perhaps up to 15%

no. i'm not interested enough in a covid vaccine to take a chance. however, if they ever need a volunteer to restart those Berkeley lsd trials, count me in. i have a friend who was part of that-pharmaceutical grade acid for free-she's never been right again. sign me up.
