Now I'm pissed. This is personal now. The name changing tyrants have gone too far.

My old high school, which is named for a Spanish priest who helped pave the way for the settlement of our state, announced yesterday it is going to change both its name and its mascot. This without consulting the alumni, without a public vote or debate.

I never had much "school spirit" when I was in high school despite participating in sports and activities. Always thought the idea of school spirit and being "true to your school" was stupid. At the annual homecoming pep rally they forced us to attend, my friends from the cross country team and I would hold up signs saying "who cares" and other slogans mocking school spirit.

Today I have never been more proud to have worn the brown and gold and called myself a Serra High Conquistador. Fuck off name changing scum.

Father Serra is literally a freaking saint. You can actually pray to him. These petty, bigoted, white hating, history hating morons aren't even Satan in comparison. Absolute nobodies who destroy to fill a sense of personal worthlessness.

To those who say a public school shouldn't be named for a religious figure, that is NOT why the lunatics are going after the name and mascot. Thats not the issue.

He is recognized for his contributions to history of our state not because he founded religious settlements. He is recognized for contributions to secular history.

I cant believe they didnt consult you first.

In Ventura, several decades ago, the concrete statue of Father Serra that sat in front of city hall started to crumble due to failure in the concrete mix.

People DONATED MONEY to have a plug hand carved to make a mold for a new statue. The plug was on public display for over a year as it was created in a workshop space that was also donated for the cause. The plug was finished, the mold made, and a new statue in bronze was cast.

The new statue was given to the city and placed on the original pedestal in front of City Hall.

Then the cancel culture showed up. They threatened to tear down the statue. The City held 1 city council meeting and after about an hour decided to remove the statue to "somewhere safe".

The pedestal is now empty and I don't know where the statue currently is. It may have joined the tombstones the City moved to "somewhere safe" back when they cleared "Cemetery Park" and then tossed the tombstones from the park into the truckloads of rocks used for building the Ventura River levee.

Cancel culture won when the limp dicked assholes in public office today were elected. You can thank your neighbors for it.

serra was a piece of shit racist who enslaved and abused the native americans who he stole land from. right up there with mother theresa.

My high school was named for the town we're in. The high school to the north of mine was named Jeb Stuart and the one to the west, Robert E. Lee. Only my high school has retained its name. Probably a lesson on how to devise a name for a high school.

because i finished high school. unlike some.

Really?

Doesn't seem likely based on your commentary here.

Now, about Serra, how EXACTLY do you know he was a "racist" who "stole the land" from the natives?

what part of my commentary here leads you to believe that? derp.
keep asking, it only proves your lack of education.

How about the part where you can't answer the question about HOW YOU KNOW EXACTLY that Junipero Serra was a racist, abused and enslaved the natives, and stole the land from them.

It's not that hard to tell us how you KNOW that.

Unless you don't.

oh, so you have nothing but we already knew that. me not answering you doesn't mean i don't know, it just means that i don't like you and would rather keep you ignorant. :)

dudly, I'm not the iggerint one in this thread.

Wait, didn't Tom Brady go to Serra High?

Maybe they should just rename the place "Tom Brady High School" after their famous alum. Their mascot could change to the "Patriots." Pretty much everyone would be okay with that name change I would think. (Unless they are not a Patriots fan. Then they can just call the mascot the "Buccaneers" or something.)

I think freakin' Barry Bonds went there too, if I'm not mistaken, back in the '80s. Ha ha, they can call the new mascot the "Serra Steroids."

no, you're merely just one of them.

Yet, somehow you can't seem to articulate any basis for your statement and instead hide behind the rather obvious deflection of "that's for me to know and you to find out".

Perhaps you do that because you have no basis and are merely fabricating the extent of your "knowledge" on the subject.

Franciscans?

How. . .exactly. . .would they accomplish "enslaving" the natives?

What about Jefferson City?
Washington DC?

Did you really think that post out?

Patriots are people who drove the natives off their native lands...

This game never ends.

This is the sum of his crimes:

"In the years since his canonization, his reputation and missionary work during the Spanish occupation have been condemned by critics who point to beatings and abuse of Native American converts...."

Not enslaving and not stealing land...

That would be conflating what the nation of Spain did
with the Church establishing missions to bring the word of God to the natives.

If you're going to quote wiki,

at least read the entire thing.

"Indian historians and authors blame Father Serra for the suppression of their culture and the premature deaths at the missions of thousands of their ancestors."[

"Serra did not just bring us Christianity. He imposed it, giving us no choice in the matter. He did incalculable damage to a whole culture".

Corine Fairbanks of the American Indian Movement proclaimed: "For too long the mission system has been glorified as these wonderful moments of California's golden era. That is not true. They were concentration camps. They were places of death."

None of that says slavery or any of the more serious charges.

You have one activist labeling them,
history is made of sterner stuff.

This is nothing more than the age-old story
of a more advanced culture encountering one
less advanced and having to adapt to a new paradigm.
