Comments seem glitchy

It seems that reader comments disappear for a while, or show up hours later after being reported as existing. (They are listed on the author's page but not with the story itself.)

We've already talked about how series are often double-billed on the submissions page. I suspect that the software on this site is getting old as well as being very complex. I guess we just have to go with the flow for the moment.

It can take time from when someone leaves a comment until it is available to be read. I don't know why the notification comes before teh comment is available but it does.

They are disappearing from old stories as well. I also have comments showing up as new, but with dates as far back as 5/9.

There also no where near as many comments as their used to be. Ever since Laurel began screening comments for 'spam'(new definition, anything she doesn't agree with or like) there have been fewer.

I think wherever they're being held for review they are getting stuck there and vanishing, and I think the old ones showing up as new somehow shook loose from whatever limbo they ended up in.

The site is vast and a total overhaul would be more time and money than they want to invest and could also require the site being down for a little bit (I'm guessing on that) so they run around putting out fires and each time they do it starts another fire. Duct tape and used bubble gum can only get you so far.

Meanwhile there are entire sections of this site that haven't been functional (the contact us button hasn't worked in years, true sign of professionalism there) or updated in years "Planet Manu" last update was 2009. I know little about tech, but it seems if they cut all those neglected sections out it might help the rest of the site.

But no worries, soon a couple of people will show up and tell you that you're imagining things or a flat out liar because nothing is ever amiss here.

Comments now have to go through a vetting process as they are all checked for spam. Also, the site is being updated in some places which is causing other sections to seem a bit glitchy.

It all works to some extent, just not as smoothly as it used to.

Manu's got an announcement up that they're working on updating the comment code, allowing for threading them, and also to allow you to subscribe to comments on a story. This MAY be a part of that?

It's not a big deal if the comments show up later on the story itself. However, this was the first time existing comments disappeared for a while - not for that long, less than a day. They all reappeared in one swoop. So okay, I understand that the code needs updating. Generally, the site works pretty well considering how old and complicated the software probably is.
