I am currently writing a story about a software engineer who specializes in cyber security. His job is not a major part of the story, I chose that profession to explain how a mid 20 guy could afford the house and the boat I needed for the story.

1- I need a name of a magazine, preferably one that is still available as a hard copy that he would subscribe too. I want a hard copy so he can read it away from a screen to give his eyes a break.

2- Is it possible to work from home in this field? I have him living in a small resort town on a lake cabin. Obviously not in silicon valley. There are mountains nearby and it snows in the area. I imagine the NE or Midwest US.

TIA for your help.

My pleasure.

First, there are no such magazines anymore. A cyber security consultant would usually read security updates from Microsoft or other vendors, or maybe study for a new qualification, since the field is evolving at a breakneck pace. In theory he could print some pages and read, but it would be quite unrealistic. He would probably use an high quality Kindle, they are as easy on the eyes as printed paper. Very expensive, but worth it.

Yes, working from home is possible, especially if he's working as a sysadmin. In that case, he would be probably on call 24/7 for emergencies, receive hundreds of emails at day and be very busy. It's a crap job, but the pay can be very good. Since he would be essentially the top tier tech, he would never deal with the public directly, only with other technical management. He would spend a lot of time in Teams meetings.

Hope it helped.

Have you ever been to the Midwest? There are no mountains around here, none. Hills -- yes, but if you are looking for snow capped peaks in the middle of the summer, or serpentine roads, or anything like that, you are in the wrong part of the world.

Most resort towns here are on the lake and away from the shore this would be as scenic as it gets:

Yeah, doesn't even need to be in the same country these days, though things like taxation can get a bit more complicated. One of my team members has been stuck in NZ for months, not that it's a bad place to be stuck just now.
