I'm surprised there's been no mention of the explosion in Beirut - I assume it was covered by US media?
"Mr Prokoshev told the BBC on Friday that the (cargo ship) Rhosus only stopped off in Beirut because its owner had money trouble. The captain said he was told the ship needed to collect an additional cargo of heavy machinery, to fund passage through the Suez Canal.
However, the machinery proved too heavy to load, and when the ship's owner did not pay the port fees and fine, the Lebanese authorities impounded it, along with the ammonium nitrate, he added. " BBC source

Total fuck-up. You've surely seen the videos I've given a bit of cash, because Lebanon is already bankrupt, hyper-inflation, covid... We have 1st world problems, but fuck. Maybe you could spare a few bucks if you can?

Give money to a terrorist nation because they blew themselves up with their bomb-making supply dump?

You must be daft.

I’ve been following it and the resulting protests. It’s getting a lot of coverage here in the US.

Sweet baby Jesus, harpy.

Ok, soz. Search on Lit sucks  but he is on Ig so Search didn't show it, which is kinda pants

oh cool - so your Vette. At least that was useful.

Carry on - nothing to see here

No, I'm not "vette" I'm the object of Sean's paranoiac fears, superstitions, and alcoholic delusions.

The internet is quick to dismiss anybody who a;so considers a terrorist attack, as a conspiracy theorist.
But how can you not?

1. Given the history of the region

2. That ship was the wet dream of any foreign interest wishing to kaput a Lebanon already weakened by covid & corruption.
Or even home-grown terrorists, who wanted to push citizens into action against their government.

3. The Lebanon pm and Trump hinted to a likelihood of a terrorist attack.
for TDSers: Yes, Trump says silly things at times, but in this case he was just relaying what his military advisers told him.

Interesting (and biased, of course) speculations in the Arab press.
Their goal is to point fingers at Hezbollah, but it could have been anyone.

1. Russian expert says that had the entire of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded, it would have whiped out the entire city.
Which points to the fact that large amounts have been stolen over the years .
ME: Stolen, but with or without govt.'s knowledge?

2. Hezbollah's has a history of using such explosives.

3. Gee, that ship was not the only explosives-riddled one, warehoused in Beirut port.
Apparently a Romanian one had similar problems (fees to expensive, then unable to find containers that fit..)

QUOTE TO 1:
Beirut would be ‘erased’ had full chemical load exploded, bulk likely stolen: Expert

"Lebanese President Michel Aoun had said the explosion was due to a stockpile of 2,750 tonnes of the industrial chemical ammonium nitrate, used in fertilizers and explosives, catching fire after having been stored at the port since 2013 without safety measures.

However, Murakhovsky said that if the full amount announced by Lebanese officials did explode, it would have erased Beirut off the map.
The military expert added in an interview with Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that it is much more likely that large amounts from such a stockpile were stolen over the years.

Lebanon’s former administrative development minister May Chidiac said on Friday that ammonium nitrate is not used by armies but rather by “terrorist organizations.”
She said in a tweet: “2,700 tonnes seized six years ago was being used for military targets,”

Damned if I know how thy would find evidence of a terrorist attack judging from the size of that crater...maybe on the moon or in orbit!

People selling it on the black market... stranded operating practice in most countries probably by a Government official or port authority...

In this case it might have just saved most the city.

In this case it might have just saved most the city.

I dunno about saved - 250k now homeless but amazingly, only 135 dead as of reports 4 days ago...
I sometimes give money to UK based charities: in this case International Rescue, because a friend works for them.
Sure the country is corrupt as fuck, but this is a human tragedy, like the Nepalese earthquakes and I gave a bit to them then. I've got a roof so...

Once again I am touched by he compassion and empathy for the innocent people of Beirut, who obviously have benefited from this explosion. Now somebody just needs to go tell them what that benefit is - looks like several of the idiots on the GB could do that job well.

Your reputation for butt kissing virtue signaling is growing faster that Girlsmiley's sweat pants.

You're lucky I'm here to make you a better person through social altruism. Put this steamer back into the recycler and when the dough is ready again, go a different way. This will count on your final semester's grade. Chop chop!
