The inherent problem with a story like this is there tends to be a lot of boring sex ed stuff that the reader is already well versed in. It might work if you can find a way to get around going through all the details and get straight to the good stuff: I spent the morning teaching Billy all about what a vagina was for, then decided to spend the afternoon giving him a hands-on lesson. After lunch, I got naked, spread my legs. and let him explore one for himself. [Fill in good stuff from here...] I'm really not interested in reading a page on men's anatomy.

Maybe there's an audience of people who want to read about the lesson playing out, but I can see myself skimming past the parts where mom explains what sperm is so I can get to the action.

Very good point. I would also avoid giving a detailed anatomical lesson. For the anatomy lesson it could start out very simply with mom telling son to go into the bathroom and use himself to identify the parts that she describes.

Correct. Here they have some form of it every year from first grade on. Even when I was in school, we had the condom thing several years before senior year.

It's a great story idea. It can easily turn into a bunch of cliches. The way to avoid that is by paying attention to the characters.

Each character has an unmet need, or more than one unmet need.

Mom is a former teacher who gave up her career to raise son and be a good wife. She has a need to prove herself as an effective teacher.

She also has an itch to push the sexual envelope, and hubby is too vanilla to fully scratch her itch.

Son has turned 18, and he's ready to go, sexually, but he's locked down. He's going crazy. Before lockdown, a girl in school teased him, but now she's not available. She's with some other guy. He's feeling vulnerable about himself sexually, but also horny.

Put the two together and you get fireworks.

Just some ideas. There are a gazillion others. Come up with your idea and your characters and their needs, and the story will flow from there.

A way to get around this is to have the son homeschooled from birth. Now that he's 18 and his peers are graduating from high school, however, the school district is pushing mom on making sure state educational requirements are fulfilled, and one of them is sex ed. Mom realizes it's time. And she's a big believer in experiential learning.
