John Lewis, truly a hero for civil rights, civil liberties and the kind of liberty outlined in the Declaration of Independence.

You put your body on the line for all of us, a baton to the head on the Pettis bridge. You will not be forgotten. Your a giant and you stand equally amount other giants who fought for average every day Americans.

Be at peace now.

John Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

Trump awarded it to Rush Limbaugh.

R.I.P. John Lewis.

You lived to see a new generation pick up the torch for social justice.

Your example provided a blueprint for how effective resistance to injustice can be accomplished with dignity and grace.

Thank you for your service.

President Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at all federal buildings for one half of one day.

One half of one day.

Dr. Tina Trent, a former liberal Democrat activist..

As somebody who spent almost two decades in John Lewis' district trying to fix the problems of crime, poverty, and family disintegration created entirely by Lewis' politics and his political party, I speak with authority when I say that Donald Trump is completely correct when he accuses John Lewis of being all talk, no action.

But, I'd go farther than Trump. Nearly every time John Lewis has "acted" legislatively, life for the poorest in his district has grown more dangerous, destabilized, and tragic.

While John Lewis spent the last 50 years growing rich and influential by repeating the same speech about being beat up on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965, the people living in the crime-ridden parts of his district have spent the 50 years since then being subjected daily to violent crimes and threats of crime at least as bad and frequently far worse than what Lewis experienced, day after day, week after week, year after year – decade after decade, unabated.

There are no federal monuments to the crime victims of John Lewis' district. These victims are barely acknowledged by Lewis himself.

Fuck off.

That's probably not too unusual for a sitting member of Congress who dies in office, though I guess you can make a case that he has significance beyond that of most congressmen.

To me, it was more noteworthy that the statement about the flag was lacking in any sort of personal appreciation; it could have been written by a robot. I'm almost positive that Trump, whose ignorance of American history is boundless, knows nothing about John Lewis except "loudmouth black guy who's always criticizing me."

The flags might be lowered longer in Georgia and his home state of Alabama.

A true American.

And when these current Republicans die...no tears will be shed. People will just say...good.

Hey speaking of Elijah Cummings.....

Elijah Cummings, John Lewis and Nancy Pelosi, all from the same mold, all turned their backs on their districts.

John Lewis was considered a legend in his district.

Senator Marco Rubio, who famously is the only sitting Senator to write his own tweets, posted a moving tribute to John Lewis today. Sadly, he posted it with a picture of him standing next to the late Elijah Cummings. Guess it's true what Vetteman said about those people all look alike to him...

The City of Atlanta is lowering them indefinitely.

Maybe the governor will rescind that too.

Outside of entertainment and royalty, it's not common that someone is famous for as long as Lewis was. He was the last living speaker from the March on Washington, which was 57 years ago, when Donald Trump was still in high school and the famously old Joe Biden hadn't yet started law school. Lewis was a public figure for so long that he outlived the first credited author on his New York Times obituary.

May he rest in peace.

Ugh, why couldn't it be one of those insane evil
Congress critters and not this great man? Too bad it wasn't turtle.

The evil ones seem to live forever.
