But I looooove the hate mail and scathing PMs anonymous people send. Got one today that crapped all over my writing style, my day job (which I apparently should not quit), my characters, and the dynamics therein.
And of course, the litany of everything they hated about my writing was laid out. In enough detail to let me know that they've read at least some of my stories rather thoroughly, so I'm flattered.
And of course, because my particular take and style are so very important to them, I will need to make sure I do more of the same. Much more of the same. I can already feel my inner troll goading me on, tell me to feed this person's need for more of what I gave them.
Constructive criticism is useful. If Tennyson lived this day and had things to tell me about my writing, I'd listen. But anonymous flames that shit all over the place, those are just fun, because they mean I'm gonna do whatever they objected to again. And again, and again.
And yes, there's the misanthropes who threaten to kill us and so on, but I'm just referring to the people who have to leave messages that trivialize and mock your works.
But that got me thinking...
Doubtless there are other threads somewhere down below on this subject, but for the sake of comparing notes, who else has RECENTLY had someone bravely PM or message them and tell them how awful their stories and style are?
My person guessed randomly at what my job in my industry was, crapped all over me for deciding that made me a qualified writer (which it doesn't, being a published author does that), and decrying my stories as whimsical pap.
I guess they never read The Great Khan. Yikes.
I refuse to believe I'm alone in receiving these love letters. Who else can give me a stellar example?
