Gervais On Cancel Culture

Gervais has true insight and is not afraid to share it.

If he were not already so successful I wonder if he would be willing to accept the wrath of the Hollywood Left establishment that does not accept free thought.

You think he "nailed it"??? He pretty much lost me when he went on the screed about the left ignoring the deaths of three homosexuals for fear of being called islamophobic, and his claim that the liberal left doesn't care about income inequality. WTAF??? His argument that people should have nuanced discussions about confederate statues or statues of those involved in the slave trade shows he hasn't been paying attention for most of his life. People HAVE been having "nuanced" discussions about those statues, and still they stood in the public square. He must have never heard the phrase "the time for talking is over".

He came across as a histrionic fool.

He assigns no blame to the racist, classist, homophobic, misogynistic cultures that are the root cause of this backlash.

He seems like someone that wants to go back to the "good old days" where there is no consequence for poor behavior or judgement.

The truth is, the world need ALL people to be MORE sensitive and unforgiving of those who support hate through words or actions.

If ALL people had held our candidates for high office in government or business to higher standards we wouldn't be plagued with people like Epstein, Trump, Weinstein, Kavanaugh, Thomas, Lauer, Ailes, O'reilly, Roses, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,.......

The old adage "think before you speak has been updated to "think before you tweet". If you want to be an influencer or a leader it's even more important to heed that advice.

Words have consequences

When does the American Renaissance start?

You didn't understand a fucking word he said, did you?

When someone rants like a fool it's hard to understand their specific point, but the gist seemed to be that the left has created a hostile environment for itself.

Some might see it as a bad thing, but if the goal is to have a truly inclusive future for ALL people instead of the racist, patriarchal, straight, violence of the past, people's words MUST be scrutinized. Past and current comments and tweets are fair game when people enter the arena's of politics and business, and attempt to influence the publics attitudes on major issues. I consider it a vetting process, and those that don't possess the ability to see the big picture and recognize when they're crossing a line, probably don't deserve to be leaders of anything.

Raising the bar on politicians, business leaders, and pundits, doesn't bother me one bit.

Hopefully the message is getting through to the younger people that hope to be future leaders. Think before you tweet.

I stopped watching ranty-pants Pie some time ago and Gervais is a just a fat version of Beavis.

Poor Lorazepam, he sees a racist behind every tree. He mentioned that he worked in law enforcement, I think he mentioned in a psych ward, I think he was a patient not an employee.

Speaking of Gervais, I thought actors and performers were supposed to shut up according to him.

He is one fucker that should take his own advice. Something tells me that he has some baggage that nobody knows about, which is why he seems to keep trying to browbeat his peers who have taken a stand against racism, misogyny, income inequality, etc, etc.

I like how he considers doxing people, getting them fired, harassing them at their home, burning their home down and even murdering people who disagree with "Woke" mob mentality = raising the bar.

That's right up there with the "peaceful shooting" from a "protester".

LOL....super woke doesn't like being told how toxic their beloved cancel culture is.

Seriously, the "woke" left is fucking insane.

Just because you're offended doesn't mean you are right...

'It's just isn't true, it protects everyone. If you're mildly left-wing on Twitter, you're suddenly Trotsky, right?

'If you're mildly conservative, you're Hitler and if you're centrist and you look at both arguments, you're a coward. Just because you're offended it doesn't mean you're right.'
this i agree with

'There's this new trendy myth that people who want free speech want to say awful things all the time': The comedian, 59, described 'wokeness' as 'a sort of fascism'
and this shows both sides of the argument, since we've seen (here in the u.s) so many examples of the trumpists demanding 'free speech' and abuse that to say the vilest things again and again... and the backlash that draws from their equivalent 'far-wokers'. it's a shame the way it's been printed, though, as it implies he sees those who are 'woke' as being the ones saying 'awful things all the time'. it's a two-way street.

there's a balance to everything, and when one side goes to extremes it's generally answered by its mirror-image

but to be aware, to come to new awareness of issues we've not thought about before or had experience of, that kind of wokeness is not any kind of fascism. it's an expansion of understanding.

Well stated, though I'm sick of the notion that comedians and entertainers get a pass for crude, racist, homophobic, and sexist material. I'm not saying they don't have a right to say it, but once they broadcast it into the public square, they are fair game for backlash if they cross a line. Andrew Dice Clay immediately comes to mind, as do many rappers.

Pundits who make a career out of saying outrageous shit also open themselves up to backlash.

Companies are starting to adjust their parameters for who they will sponsor, and media companies are taking personalities words and actions into account when providing them a platform. "Wokeness"(or common decency) is a trend like any other trend, and I for one hope it becomes permanently mainstream. Forces are constantly trying to gaslight people into believing that racism, sexism, classism, etc are perfectly acceptable things to advocate for going forward. The attacks on "wokeness" is just one of their tactics.

It is not possible to "abuse" free speech. Free speech is not a privilege. Free speech that does not offend anyone or would meet your standards needs no protecting.

What part of "free" is difficult? The freedom part, or the natural right part?

‘It makes you wonder who this Govt was really clapping for on Thursdays’

We all knew that the government were clapping fraudulently.

You don't agree with his views so you choose to mock his weight.

I'm offended and officially cancelling you from Lit.

:D
I thought Pie was great and looked forward to his vids, until he completely changed his colours over Brexit, going from attacking everyone from Farage upward, to then name-calling Remainers. Maybe I was naive and fat, but I suddenly realised he's just an entertainer and, like any politician, will change his views to stay popular. He has zero integrity and comes across as the smart ranty asshole at the wannabes winebar.

Gervais has never been funny, but spends his whole time trying to convince he's funny in 'a really clever kind of unfunny way, which is so clever, and funny'. His humour is lame and he constantly craves approval, usually by having a dumb sidekick ( who is the viewer ) to bounce off. He is so creepy but it's his lack of integrity that I detest and why I won't waste my time with him. ( Apologies to lame people FM )

Anyway that's my ad hominem humour cancel critique: if you guys find them funny, then I'll be in the kitchen heating up the pizza until they're done. Cancel culture or wokeness is simply the pushback to populism. Get over yourself and quit the whining mock offence. If you're offended by wokeness or cancel then it's doing its job.
