BEIJING (Reuters) - China will attack Taiwan if there is no other way of stopping it from becoming independent, one of the country’s most senior generals said on Friday, in a rhetorical escalation from China aimed at the democratic island Beijing claims as its own.

Speaking at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on the 15th anniversary of the Anti-Secession Law, Li Zuocheng, chief of the Joint Staff Department and member of the Central Military Commission, left the door open to using force.

The 2005 law gives the country the legal basis for military action against Taiwan if it secedes or seems about to, making the narrow Taiwan Strait a potential military flashpoint.

“If the possibility for peaceful reunification is lost, the people’s armed forces will, with the whole nation, including the people of Taiwan, take all necessary steps to resolutely smash any separatist plots or actions,” Li said.

People thought they were fucked in 1958 but when that ended the red Chinese having superior aircraft lost 31 Migs to two Nationalist F-86s. Taiwan's pilots today are far superior to those of the past and are flying F-16 block 20, Mirage 2000-5, and the F-CK-1, fighters. Their landing beaches are all mined and they have a robust air defense system. Their ground forces are well armed, highly disciplined, and motivated. So if China does take Taiwan, it will be with the bloodiest nose they've had since Korea, where they took as many as 400,000 dead.

There is evidence of cohesion problems within the ranks of the Chinese army. They have little actual combat experience, so the jury is out on their combat effectiveness and execution. Their poor showing against Indian troops a couple of weeks ago begs questions about their training, and fighting spirit.

Even Chinese can't not care about optics, not completely.

What we called CNN defense during Song Revolution in 1991 (dissolution of USSR) might still work. [It does presume that broadcasting use of force from an independent viewpoint should, potentially, carry international consequences, and thus discourage the aggressor.]

Drones and missiles. China has the resources to win an electronics war before they put one boot on soil.

An invasion failure could trigger a regime change. They could have the regime change first then be more ready. China seems to be at the end of a dynasty.

If China was smart they would move Now

How times has China rehearsed the invasion of Taiwan? Probably 100. Chinas navy is good at intimidating fishing boats but they are far from a sea going power. Can they conduct an amphibious Assault for the 1st time against a well trained, defended oponent? It would be a Chinese blood bath. Taiwan has a robust air defense and they have a better quality of armament. Anyone remember the Faulkland Islands? One missile 1 ship, poof.

They need only hold out until other countries get involved and defense is easier. We are currently seeing Japans reemergence as a military force to extend their power in the region (their military expansion in light of china's aggressive moves).

Australia has a long tradition of a small but skilled navy and they now have an axe to grind with China over Corona virus. Australia is expanding their submarine fleet.

If China is contemplating a Taiwan move they must factor in 3 things.

1)Who wins the election in November. If it's Trump it's a no go. Biden, green light. He would not interviene.

2) Subic Bay & Clark field. If we move assets there permenently that would be a big blow to China's ambition to be the dominant power in asia.

3) It serves no purpose to whole destroy something you 2ant y o poses unless you are making an example out of someone trying to resist you. IMHO

At the Battle of Wuhan (yes same place) June to October 1938 the Chinese Flooded the Yangtse plain to slow down the Japanese Army. They drowned 500,000 of their own people then lost a further 260,000 in fighting. The Japanese took the city but at such cost their expansion into China ground to a halt. For the Japanese a military victory but a strategic disaster.

So how do you combat a nation which is prepared to lose 15 times more people in 3 months than the US lost in Vietnam.

Chinese history is full of instances like this.

They couldn't even take Vietnam...

Couple weeks ago they got slapped around on India's northeastern border, though on a smaller scale. Then we have the 2015 incident in the Sudan where Chinese troops refused to fight, abandoned their posts leaving their weapons and ammunition behind. In the end they had to be rescued by, get this, Indian troops. Don't take my word for it, read about it here:
