TERFium promoticus - JK Rowling

Just because a footballer is worth a billion dollars doesn't suddenly make them an expert in buddhism nor can one's ability to write fairy stories enlighten you about LGBT issues, even if they are a woman, even if they are white nor even if they occasionally post feminist tweets.

I've wrongly held back from criticising JK Rowling in the past, because I thought she had some bragging rights and her spikey tweets at politicians had wide support. But then... but then she claimed Dumbledore was gay and earlier this year, suggested he was passionately in love with Gellert Grindelwald, but that she was totally ok with this and it was totally ok for even men to express their love even if it was towards another man. Totally.

But as Eric Snider tweeted back

"J.K. Rowling Confirms Some Characters in Her Books and Movies Are Gay Everywhere Except in the Books or the Movies "

So why, when you're already worth a billion, do you need to spice up sales in this way? Is she becoming Dolores Umbridge and doesn't need reasons, just bigotry with a giggle? I don't care what her reasons are, but after months of twitter silence she pops up with overt support for a TERF ( trans exclusive radical feminist ) who lost her appeal for unfair dismissal in court, she does herself no favours at all. The woman she is supporting "... was accused at the employment tribunal of having retweeted transphobic material, including a newspaper cartoon of a person flashing two women at a London swimming pond, with the caption “It’s alright – it’s a woman’s penis”.

It's not the first time JK has revealed her cards on transgender issues, writing under her pseudonym
"If you go for that door one more fucking time I’m calling the police and I’ll testify and be glad to watch you go down for attempted murder. And it won’t be fun for you inside, Pippa,’ he added. ‘Not pre-op.” — Except from The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling" Would she dare to write this about a gay or lesbian character? There's a pattern here and it sticks

Here's the uncheck list
* Claims Dumbledore is gay but excludes any reference in the books
* Supported the casting of Johnny Depp (at a time when he was accused of domestic violence)
* Supports a transphobe
* Wizard-privilege

Right on Dolores

Somebody pointed out the irony of a female author writing under a male pseudonym while trashing a trans woman.

That's before we get started on the race of unlikeable hook-nosed money-grubbing bankers who occasionally plot against the human race and who (in the films) have a great big Star of David in the floor pattern of their bank. Nothing problematic there.

Neil's still good, though: https://twitter.com/neilhimself/status/1208362368264216577

Now look. I just got into trouble on my blog for saying something like: 'Duff duff duff duff, da da, dud dud, dedededede - lights lights strobing strobing, flashflashflashflash duff duff duff duff - yeah I fucking so AM trance phobic...'

I got into BIG trouble. Okay?

So please, what is 'wizard-privilege?'

Ha! :D I can see that was a kinda obscure .. analogy, metaphor?

I was referring to the pervading theme of the Harry Potter stories, where people are divided into Wizards and Muggles. Wizards are innately superior and Muggles can never (truly) be wizards because... just because. It's a class system of born privilege: something that still thrives in the UK, sadly.

There's another racist/class issue in JKs writing with regard to Elves. Only one Elf, Dobby, is allowed to break the bonds of servitude to become a free Elf, but it is stated that Elves know their place and so are content with it.

I see Rowling has been at it again on Twitter  I think she might be off her meds.

"People who menstruate’. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?"

She's an author so she chose her words with care and we shall judge her accordingly. This was a totally unnecessary tweet to make, unless you wanted to have a dig at trans folk.

She went out, digging herself deeper
"If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth."

Yup, the truth can't hurt, like "So many black people die of Covid-19" is truth, or "Gay people have anal sex" is truth or "Lots and lots of Jews died in the Holocaust". Context and implication, you bitch - STFU

edit: fucksake Literotica, the missing letters are p r o j e c t . o r g.

Yea, I read Daniels attempt at diplomacy, encouraging people not to turn their backs on the books if they enjoyed them. My very learned bookish friend thought her later books were badly edited and didn't read any more after #3. Personally, I think she turning into a crabby old lady. My gran used to say racist things and then declare 'I know I'm racist and I'm not going to change.' Trying to act as a cheerleader for menstruation is never going to work, given the number of exceptions amongst cis folk, never mind everyone else.

Oh ffs, talk about not digging when you're already in a hole... Here's a link to a rambling opinion essay written by JKR, which I read up to the point where she refers to Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria and before I lost patience.

What I find so irritating about her is that she makes a performance of being 'concerned' and justifies her beliefs with her much publicised philanthropy, but she can't help talk BS. She doesn't know her facts: for example she claims that 'a man can legally call himself a woman in the UK' and cites that such a person can use the women's changing room in Marks & Spencers. No, this isn't how the law works in the UK and she is wrong.

She keeps banging on about being called a TERF with mock affront, even though many of her views and misconceptions see her circling the same wagons in angry defiance.

"I’ve met trans people, and read sundry books, blogs and articles by trans people, gender specialists, intersex people, psychologists, safeguarding experts, social workers and doctors, and followed the discourse online and in traditional media" she rails, but clearly has been selective in what she chooses to remember or believe.

Under her pseudonym, Robert Galbraith, she wrote a detective novel, Silkworm that critic Katelyn Burns highlighted
“In the scene, a trans woman, Pippa, follows and tries to stab the protagonist, Cormoran Strike, before getting trapped in Strike’s office,” Burns observes. She goes on to note how Rowling makes a point of commenting on her trans character’s visible Adam’s apple, and the fact her hands are jammed in her pockets. After Pippa attempts to escape a number of times, Strike says: “If you go for that door one more time I’m calling the police and I’ll testify and be glad to watch you go down for attempted murder. And it won’t be fun for you Pippa… Not pre-op.”

OK Rowling, we get it. You're a rich author, so no one is allowed to challenge you, even when it's stuff like that^^ .The language of Twitter is apparently not to your taste & no one offers you the respect you feel you deserve because $$$ . Well tough titty love. STFU and enjoy your riches, without making other people's lives that bit more difficult with your falsehoods and bigotry.

If the link disappears through retraction, I copied it to my other Tumblr account here

Also a bit in there where she insinuates that a lot of trans men are just confused autistic girls :-/

There's also her description of Rita Skeeter, one of the lesser villains of the HP series:

Skeeter was described as having blonde hair set in elaborate curls that contrasted oddly with her heavy-jawed face. She wore jewelled spectacles studded with rhinestones, and had thick fingers ending in two-inch nails, painted crimson. Her blonde curls were curiously rigid, suggesting it was styled with the magical equivalent of hairspray. In addition, she had pencilled-on eyebrows and three gold teeth, as well as large, masculine hands. Her bright scarlet painted fingernails and toenails were usually likened to claws or talons.

That's from a fan site, but IIRC the wording is almost verbatim from the book - basically the TERF stereotype of a trans woman. I don't think she intended Skeeter as a trans woman, but it's revealing, given her penchant for using physical traits to signal personality.

(Let's not talk about the hook-nosed money-goblins whose bank, in the film version, prominently features a six-pointed star...)

IIRC, the current ruckus kicked off when she retweeted another TERF complaining that transgender people were erasing lesbians. She'd certainly know about LGB erasure...

Wow, that's shocking.

In the UK the story has now elevated to second or third pages with more coverage and reaction. JK is still justifying her right to offend by saying stuff like
“I’ve been in the public eye now for over 20 years and have never talked publicly about being a domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor,” the author wrote, in part. “This isn’t because I’m ashamed those things happened to me, but because they’re traumatic to revisit and remember.”

Never? So the article in Newsweek 2017 was just a hint? In the same article, just to jog a memory, she also supported Johnny Depp's casting, despite his as yet unresolved abuse/divorce case. Maybe JK has a soft spot for JD?

I've no doubt that JK is a complicated person and has issues with her past. She should try to avoid letting her past influence her present and get some proper counselling. In the mean time JK, STFU - it's for your own sake, but I suspect we've not heard the last from her.

We have heard from a number of other people:
Evanna Lynch
“I imagine that being trans and learning to accept and love yourself is challenging enough and we as a society should not be adding to that pain. Feeling like you don’t fit in or aren’t accepted for who you are are the worst, most lonely feelings a human can experience and I won’t be helping to marginalise trans women and men further.”

and Daniel Radcliffe has written an essay in response
“Transgender women are women,” Radcliffe says. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

and the list is growing, with Emma Watson and Paris Lees amongst them.

I'm not in the same world - not your elf world (although I 100% have experience with actual real elves...), anyway.

I hated JKR originally because I thought she was a total complete fraud all along, with her agents and publishers REALLY being the 'gods behind the scenes' and just plain plagiarizing Walter R. Brooks - whom most of you kids have never even heard of because it was all before your time.

Now...

I think I love her.

But I would still slap her.

And lots. Thought not for the reasons you all want to.

I'm so happy for you... presuming that, in your fantasy world, you want to slap JKR and have sex with her? Given that she is already the victim of abuse, I'm sure you're just the man - send an owl

Also Rupert Grint and Eddie Redmayne, and plenty of other HP actors.

This is a story that won't lie down. I'm not sure I like the way trans folk are in the cross-hairs of the media right now. All we want to do is get on with our lives without every Tom, Dick and Harry thinking they have blogging rights over us.

I can see how that would get annoying.

You've got great blogging rights. I listen carefully whenever I read your stuff. A long time ago, your writings reflected a sense of transition. It has not felt that way to me in a long time. I think you've made some very good choices in your life.

Was Channel 4 even offering? I don't think Glinners has worked for them since 2013, unless I missed something. Seems like his anti-trans obsession has burned quite a few bridges lately - he got kicked off twitter for "hateful conduct" towards trans women, warned by police for doxxing a trans woman, and apparently it's alienated him from his wife and family.
