Did she say why she hates the wires? One of my friends hates them because they break out and poke her. This is a problem with cheap bras, but I've had expensive ones do it too. Or maybe the bra doesn't fit right. A well fitting bra should be comfortable.

I wore underwires for most of my life but then I started getting a rash where the wires are, so no more. Now I just go for functionality. I wear cheap Hanes, size XL.

You are correct though. With no wires, the bra isn't usually going to be very sexy. I suggest trying places like TJ Maxx or Ross. They might have something there. I just looked online at Wacoal and Natori. Their wireless bras are boring. Expensive! But boring.
