I'm not sure where my dad was at the time ...still in North Africa or back in England.

But rest assured he was aggravating the crap out of somebody!:D

Never discuss the American Revolution with a Limey. They think they let us have it. Both times they lost.

Actually, most of them will be entirely unaware that it happened at all. One of a great many colonies over a great number of years. It has nowhere near as significant to us as it is to you.

Thank you Russians for doing the vast majority of fighting off Hitler's advances and Brit's for defending the other side of front and holding on til we American's finally, reluctantly got in the fight. Thank you American's who fought and gave their lives to end Hitler's regime....our politicians and influencial leaders of that time made a lot of poor choices(isolationism and anti-Semitism)so I've got no praise for them.

The Russians suffered most in Europe and had far more casualties than any of the Allies in the Second World War. D-Day would have been impossible without the Russian offensives.

My grandfather was there. Not at the end, though.

We, and I mean "we" collectively, have let all of them down.

One uncle was in England, recovering from wounds sustained near Metz, my other uncle was serving in the artillery on Okinawa. My dad was just turning 17, so he missed out.

I think almost every adult in my neigborhood was a WWII vet. I remember when the oldest kid, Steve, from across the street told his dad he wanted to back pack across Europe before going to college.

His dad said, "Yeah, I back packed across Europe when I was your age, but I had Germans shooting at me."

My dad was in England. Air force.
Uncle 1 (landed D Day) wounded in action four days before VE, Germany. Armour.
Uncle 2, northern Italy. Infantry.

my dad was on a CVE and at that time they were off Okinawa providing air support.
only 1 month away from taking a kamikaze on their flight deck.

my uncle was on Okinawa. 1st marine div.

a big thank you to all who posted.......except for the slack jaw. with the multi alts
