I suspect they want to "cut to the chase" instead of taking the time to establish a connection in a polite and civil manner.

It would be curious to know how long it takes one of the skype/kik/google hangout afficionados to suggest that a deep, meaningful connection might be established faster by turning on cams and exhibiting genetalia.
