Photography >>> ART

Thanks for sharing.:)

I find most of your work very titillating. (yeah, bad pun) well composed, cropped/farmed, tactile.

You have an artful eye for volumes and textures, often quite sculptural.

I reckon the weakest piece you showed was "Impression'istic" — the pose is not as creative and the pointillism seems to be simply a photoshop filter and in rigid rows, rather than how the dots might have been applied by hand, or enhancing the volume of the model the way your projected lines do. The same pose "SHATTER projection"is much stronger.

Bad puns are welcomed and as it happens i find ELATED and TITS go 'hand in hand' (in my 'small' mind ;)

An artful eye i like and agree with... interested to understand a bit more about the VOLUME and SCULPTURAL reference.... i have a feel for what it relates to but would be interest to hear a bit more.

The "Impression'istic" image was part of the projection shoot - which was 'experimental' and 'confined' - camera position for 90% of the shot was under the stairs!!! oh for some good space!
For a number of the shots I did try some Photoshop filters over the images to 'gauge' the different looks - the impressionist reference was not heavily geared to the art 'movement' (?) (I am quite ignorant of art history) - i think the lines are lines projected onto the body!
The SHATTERED image was the favourite for the moel - i tihnk it had 'other meaning' for her - for me it was a visual thing.

Thanks again

As for the Volume and "sculptural" comments, I mean that, you use of cropping in some images can "distance" the viewer from the subject to allow for greater interpretation of simply the forms, which can appear almost as landscapes.

To explain what I meant about the "impressionistic", I might have to paint a quicky to show what I meant.

Thanks Throbbs

Appreciated and the volume concept is interesting - definitely something i do do - often cropped in the viewfinder but then also potentially cropped for further effect / look post shooting.

Impressionism - i am happy at what it is.. for me an impression is an impression and at that 'it' can be fluid.

I'm especially taken by the "light and shadow" images. How they interact with the models curves is quite interesting. As far as "is it art?" I've seen more said about far less! So, yes. Good job.

Yes, it is def. art. When it comes to photography, I love black&whate for example.

I love this one: http://www.myfolio.com/art/ct4sfsi0ud
Shape and light too.

Thank you - the 'is it art' question - is partly tongue in cheek and just a saying that has always amused me.

Being semi ignorant of art education and history ... along with a healthy cynicism of everything.. and then listening too and experiencing pretentious art critiques offloading 'some crap' about 'a' take on art...

So i agree IT IS (can be) ART ... as can pretty much anything in my eye.

For me photography is about the image and the image is made of light falling on a subject / scene creating shapes, form, textures, shadows, highlights.... the idea in the mind of the photographer, their will to produce / experiment / create a shot... and then their is the viewer who will take their own impression of the image...

Thanks for the comments.

By light and shadow ..do you mean the projection imagery?

These were an idea that I knew would work (not original as they have been done many times before, for me influenced by some 60's psychedelic imagery of a similar ilk)

I work with projection (onto large screens) - so i knew the concept just interested to try it out and experiment with imagery, textures and light.... and as you state how it interacts with the model.

Certainly something I am looking to do more of and experiment further

Thank you - see my comments below - as they relate very much to this image.

Interestingly the 'SHATTER' image was kind of taken as a quick 'give it a try' - as i had the image ready to project. Wasn't something that i had a strong reason for shooting / using ... as it was quite blatant and suggestive.... when I worked on the images (cropping, enhancing post shoot) - i kinda left this almost didnt work it up... but it has created quite a reaction... the model herself considered it one of her favourites and she felt it gave an impression of vulnerability that was not often associated with her .. she posts many images of a strong independent (older woman of Fetlife)

This, this, this, this and that. More the second and third, as they are more "simple" and allow the subjects curves to define herself. Less so for the first because that isn't as much light but colored light which changes the definition.

I'm quite well versed in the 60's as that was my time. However, their tack was to use chaotic and malleable light and/or subjects, where the living subject was less the defined, but more of a screen to project onto.
Your work also reminds me of the music video for "Silent Running" by Mike & the Mechanics.

All of those images are not only impressive for their planning and execution, but they meet every workable definition of "art" that I have seen.

Should any or all of them survive a prudent and judicious moderator's consideration on a website that limited postings of adult-themed and nude photographs to art (and medical science)? I offer an emphatic: "Yes, all of them should."

Thank you Nubbin

The first line I take with much humbleness (if that is the right word) - i appreciate what you say and agree (not so humble maybe!)

The second line - sounded very 'arty' to me

Thanks LWulf - i totally get what you say about those images and it pretty much hits one aspect of what I was 'hoping' to achieve. This shoot was partly experimental.. so I was using patterns and images that I 'thought' would work well.... the next time I would probably try to create / use images that were produced to work closely with the body / form / setting. Another concept was to project into the boody or onto body parts - so the projected image kind of hid the body part (to degrees)

The 60's imagery - yes very much a psychedelic haze of blurred image, gyration and swirling pattern (just my observations)
I worked with a sound engineer who wanted to re created an oil wheel - an attachment (lens) i believe that went in front of a light source - oil sandwiched between 2 panes of glass that would respond / move / expand as it heated up creating these weird projected patterns / colours.
I am so open to experimenting with colour, light and patterns!!

I really like the ideas in the projected images, but for me the most interesting is the red mask image !
(I think I may need to incorporate that idea into one my future drawings).....

ps I was not aware of the myfolio website till I saw yours !

Hi -yeas that 'mask' is an interesting 'subject' - the model had had someone else shoot it on her and i really liked the image (look / feel) - so tried my own take... i liked 'isolating' the mask form the face..... some kind of interplay between mask and being masked (hidden, unseen) ... in other version the mask becomes yellow!

The myfolio site is interesting (free)... have had some feedback saying it is quite slow??
Which i have also found out myself - plus i can figure the search function... seems to go nowhere for me

I'm not sure about the exact mechanics for that instance, but it sounds like they used a lava lamp or something equal. Those were highly pressurized to handle heat for extended periods without popping open. They used what looked like a beer bottle cap to keep it closed. Heaven help you if you ever opened up one of them (it just spilled out, but impossible to close back up again). I believe the products inside were an oil based wax (which melted from heat), and a clear oil based liquid.
While both were oil based, they didn't mix for density reasons. The clear thinner oil allowed the heavier oil to sink to the bottom, where it got heated, and rise to the surface, to cool down and sink again.

Gives an idea

I have worked on live events and worked alongside lighting designers/ engineers - amazing what you can do with intelligent fixtures, gobos and LED colour changers... which is posibly all waffle ;)

I just signed up to myfolio - I got as far as uploading some art but it does not actually show it.....
it seems as though I need to pay a sub to have my portfoilio visible, as there is a message advising me that I have to "upgrade account to publish your portfolio".
So unfortunately that is me out, I wonder if you may have signed up there a while ago when it was free and they allowed those members to continue as free ?

Unsure of what the score i was/ is with the site... just had some people say it was slow! (i would not pay for it)

I also use purpleport for some images - free account but can only showcase a limited amount of pics
