I guess they did a sweep recently? I just looked at my stats and I lost over six hundred votes across all my stories.

That seems a little crazy...

A couple of weeks ago I lost 10 votes and 0.11 from the score of my highest rated story. Around the same time I gained 2 votes and lost 0.10 from my (at the time) second highest rated story. The scores for the rest of my stories bounced around by a couple of hundredths, but in no discernible pattern.

Several monthly contests have been tallied for 2019 very recently, and those sweeps are about the same as a themed contest sweep. They cut deep. So any stories published during 2019 are probably going to see big sweeps until they're all completed.

Like themed contest sweeps, they aren't entirely limited to the targeted stories. Older stuff may have votes swept too.

On Feb. 12, the day when the Val's Day contest winners were announced, both of my entries had about 15 to 20 votes stricken, and both stories' ratings jumped about 0.15 to 0.20. One or two votes were also snipped from seven older stories.

The weird stuff is more noticeable with lower vote counts. My current high scorer lost 10 votes, but the score was unchanged on that pass. The previous pass took off 6 or 7 votes, and bumped it by .04. But that story now has over 700 votes, so a single vote has little effect. The stories with only a few dozen votes are more volatile.

The thing that was really startling about it was I had number one story on the site. I lost 10% of my votes and dropped from first to like a six way tied for third.

Kind of a bummer.

Oh. Those with few votes...

45/10= 4.5 red H,
Sweep
43/9= 4.77 no red H
Guess a 2 got swept...
Points went up - but I lost the H
Great sadness
But then
46/10 = 4.6 red H
Yipee!
Hold it...
Why am I happy I got a three?
I've gone crazy too...

Oh yeah. And none of my stories have nearly that many votes.
The highest rated story went from 73 votes to 63.

The 4.77 will become red. You just checked while the posting was in transition. The various lists don't post at the same time.

A sweep would help explain why a whole handful of my 4.49 stories have made it to 4.5 and beyond. Now, how long before the next squadron of one-bombers arrives? :)

That's the impact of trolling one-bomb votes being removed, or "not helpful fives" being removed. Your series has had extra visibility being named in the awards nominations, so you're now seeing the downside of that - extra attention which isn't in the form of genuine readers, but people jumping to the end without reading, and scoring.

Don't worry about it - the 10% were false votes in the first place, so you're now closer to a true voting response.

That would be true if there were over ten votes remaining, but one must have 10 votes regardless of the score before the red H is awarded. Therefore at 43 with 9 votes, one more vote (assuming it wasn’t a 1) was needed. Glad the next was high enough to keep it above 4.5 and restore it.

I currently have 3 stories in the 4.48 to 4.51 range. All have about 60 to 100 votes so they’re regularly bouncing: H, no H, H, no H...

So these sweeps, they are just to remove bogus ratings? How do they measure that? I wouldn't mind a few of my 1 bombs to be removed if that time comes

No one knows exactly and it is not good to speculate as it might give the bombers insights into ways around. Too much information out there already.

Sweeps go through all stories, regardless whether they're in a contest or not. The algorithm is secret Laurel business, and as TxRad says, best to keep it that way.
