What Are You Listening To Now? 6.0

Bent Knee : Shiny Eyed Babies

One of the better things to come out of the USA recently.

Great song. I'm a fan of early Dream Theater. Sadly I've only seen them live once - and it was one of the loudest sets I've ever heard, which didn't do their performance any favors. I quite like some of their recent work - but they aren't an "auto-buy" any more.

So I read this after putting on live Dream Theater....

I've never seen them live but love their live recordings (but I can control the volume.)

I've been on a Sons of Apollo kick since their new release, so I wanted to go back to this particular album with two-thirds of Sons of Apollo (Sherinian and Portnoy) playing on it.

Love Portnoy era DT but Mangini era still hasn't grown on me though I do like The Astonishing (one of the dozen that do I think....) and Distance Over Time. Not on auto-buy either but if the next is as good as Distance Over Time then I'm in.

Peace, love and happiness Neil.

I was first "converted" to Dream Theater by "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory". The live show I saw contained a lot of that album's material, as well as six-degrees.

I think we're on the same page - I prefer early-ish Portnoy and Labrie era DT. There are a few pieces on later recordings that I particularly enjoy, though - like the 15-minute "Stream Of Consciousness" on "Train Of Thought".

And earlier today, recommended by a friend :

I have no idea what to call this - but it's weird and wonderful. Try it!

Not sure I could listen to a whole album of the same thing, though I'm going to explore it a bit...

I'm too old for Poppy. And I'm not sure if I'd call this "songwriting". Feels more like "toss everything into a blender and see what happens." Or maybe I haven't found the right drugs which go well with this particular insanity.

Nice :D

I have all 3, and far prefer the 2nd - but perhaps I haven't spent enough time with 3rd degree yet.

I like all three. Third Degree is my preferred. True Colors is second followed by the original first album and second nature equally.

Have you heard True Colors? That is where they released an unmastered raw mix version of the first album. In the notes the group said the band wanted a mainstream appeal so producer Peter Collins cranked up the volumes and pushed the limit.

For True Colors they backed all this off and toned it down. This version is cleaner and much less distorted.

Pandora's Pinata

Diablo Swing Orchestra

Evening Musical Litsters - peace, love and happiness

Sounds like I have some research to do! :D

Never knew that "Sultans of Swing" goes extremely well with a Slipknot break.

And while I'm at it: I liked the Aquaman movie - except for one tiny detail:
The horrible butchering of Toto's "Africa". The original is a masterclass in subtlety, especially in regards to the groove. Here's a cover which shows how to properly do it - with respect and tongue in cheek both.
