Brave (Deluxe edition remixed by Steven Wilson in 2018)
Marillion
How does that compare to the original? If I remember, it already had quite a fat sound.
There is a higher degree of subtlety I find, a depth to the fat if you will. Quiet moments sound even more quiet.
It reminds me of his work on the early Yes albums: the subtlety is distinguished in a very positive way.
Hm. I might check it out. Too bad "Brave" isn't my favourite Hogarth-era Marillion record. That honor still goes to "Holidays in Eden", even though it's seen as a lesser album by many because of too much pop, too many ballads. I don't care. "Hoildays..." and "Season's End" have huge sentimental value for me.![]()

Most bands I can identify one particular album as my main go to for that band, but Marillion defies this. Both with the H albums as well as the Fish works. I like something a lot from every album.
It's not like I'd like to burn every other Marillion album at the stake - far from it. My first was - probably not a surprise - "Misplaced Childhood", but over the years, I've collected everything up to and including "Afraid of Sunlight" plus a few later ones here and there, a few live ones and the Fish/Hogarth singles compilation - which in the end gets the most rotations on average. I can do "Garden Party" followed by "Hooks In You" no problem.
I think I'm a patient listener, but Marillion's last few records have tested that patience. Maybe I just miss the exuberance of their earlier works. Maybe Hogarth's aged voice isn't to my liking. Maybe I'm just not in enough of a prog mindset to "get" it (although I have little problems with Voyager or Empyrios - and they do Prog a lot more extremely). No idea. All I know is that I can't sit through anything of Marillion's since the early 2000's, not even the live stuff. Which makes me sad somehow.

Wishbone Ash - Live At Rockpalast 1976
A bit of rock history. Without these guys, we probably wouldn't have had Iron Maiden and a TON of other twin-guitar slinging metal bands. Fun fact - there's a new - and from what I've already heard - pretty snazzy new record coming out later this month. Between Wishbone Ash, Black Star Riders (the flagbearers of Thin Lizzy) and Deep Purple, that's a lot of old guys kicking serious ass still.

Well, if not, then you probably don't wanna listen to this one, because this one is a classic.
