Isolated Blurt Thread Again

One car fixed...

We have three cars but two have been out of action. My newer Volvo estate was in an accident over Christmas sqaushed betwen two heavy trucks.

My older Volvo estate was shedding all its water after a few miles with the head gasket blown. Today we got it back. The garage has:

Changed the oil and filters,
Put in new spark plugs,
Replaced cam belt,
Skimmed head and fitted new gasket,
Put in new thermostat,
Replaced antifreeze,
and road tested.

Total cost including parts, labour and taxes: £577.75

That is not unreasonable (except the **** taxes!).

I'm not sure if I should have started a thread to introduce myself or not. :)
Longtime lurker and reader, I haven't published anything yet but I am working on a story. Just wanted to say 'hello'.

Welcome. The Authors' Hangout is generally a friendly place and encourages those who want to post stories.

I wanted to order a couple of presents for friends from an online retailer.

I had name, address, email and postcode but the order would not be accepted without their phone number and one is ex-directory.

I had to use another site. Grrr!

When that happens to my orders, I leave my own Tel No.

I have inherited a chocolate box full of family photos from my father. It was no use asking him who the people were. My mother, died nearly 25 years ago, was the only one who knew who everyone was. My father relied on her and his short-term memory loss in his last decade meant he had no idea.

I have been trying to identify photos from the 1940s and 1950s before I really knew who was whom. My surviving relations are too young to know.

My daughters have a much better idea about their distant relations, than I ever had at their age, because they follow each other on social media. All I knew was that I had dozens of cousins some of whom I might see at Christmas, but what they were doing, who married whom and what children they had? I had no idea. All I knew was I had at least a hundred relations but everywhere we went we seemed to uncover a few dozen more...

I have tons of old photos as well. Some had names on the back, but in pencil, which has faded so much I can't figure them out. I have a few from when my father was in the Navy but he refused to discuss anything from his past. I know my own kids don't want them. I've offered them to my sisters without a response from either of them. So the pictures stay in the closet, ignored, taking up space. Just one more reason I rarely take pictures of anyone.

Lynn - If you can identify anything or anyone in the photos, and/or if you have your father's naval records that could help identify places, events, or people, an archive might be interested. I gave most of my photos and negatives from my student activist days to two different archives.

We didn't find anything from his years in the navy. Oh, wait, I found a hunting license for 100% Americans that entitled them to Jap hunting, no limit.

I did send a package to a city nearby filled with photos of a yearly celebration.

Woo Hoo!

I have just been told that I won the first prize in our local preserved railway's Christmas Raffle - a day's driving experience for one of their trains. It is nearly 55 years since I last drove a locomotive - a dockyard steam train.

Why are toggle switches back-to-front ?

Because people are more likely to mix up left-right than they are up-down or back-front.

I'm a "directional dyslexic" myself so I know the struggle. I do know my left from my right when I stop to think about it, but something in my brain would rather flip a coin than commit the difference to instinct. Whenever I'm driving and someone has to give directions, I have them say "turn right towards me" or "left towards you". I can't even imagine how often I would screw up a left-right toggle switch.

Ah yes, but do you know your arse from your elbow? :)

Grandads have uses

I have just re-stuck the soles on my grandson's trainers. Mum doesn't know how; Dad doesn't have the glue...

An Experiment

I have just submitted a true, non-erotic story about an incident in my youth. All the names, except mine, are real. There is absolutely NO sex whatever in it.

It is not really a Literotica story but I will be interested to see if there is any response to it.

Gonna teach 'em, then ?

I had not realised the significance of "resistance" in a small die-cast box.
Two ohms from one end to the other ?
Ridiculous !

Messed up timeline

I have just submitted a story. In the final edit I noticed I had two contradictory reasons for the presence of a secondary set of characters. I corrected that.

But when I brought the draft up in preview I realised I had mucked up the timeline. The major part of the story is set between a Friday evening and a Wednesday morning but I had confused where and what was happening on the Monday or Tuesday.

I had to sort that out on Make Changes which I don't like doing except for typos or minor format errors. Leaving it that late can lead to yet more errors. :(

I mean the sort of toggle switches found on the front panel of a control thing, rather than that used to turn on the room lights. The actual connection is opposite to the direction indicated by the toggle itself.

All I need to do now is find the screws to secure the lid. . . .

PS. I have a pal who has a similar directional problem (or worse).
I have to get him to say "my side", or "your side" to indicate a turn; he gets Right & Left all mixed up.

Yep. My sister has it too. We were in the car once, I was driving, she knew where we were going. She said "turn right." I turned left. The thing is, she actually meant to say left, but she got it wrong. We canceled each other out. Her boyfriend in the back seat about died laughing at us.
