Again and again and sadly again you read news article after news story about some poor person who has taken their life and quite often there is a back story of social media backlash or bullying, encouraging them to go off themselves or that they are fugly or have committed the cardinal sin of pissing off/upsetting their followers etc.

Interesting article calling for facebook and instagram to hand over data:

"The college’s demands come amid growing concern that young people are being harmed by material that, for example, encourages self-harm, suicide and eating disorders. They are included in a new position statement on technology use and the mental health of children and young people."

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2...for-social-media-data-to-protect-young-people

“Self-regulation is not working. It is time for government to step up and take decisive action to hold social media companies to account for escalating harmful content to vulnerable children and young people,” said Dubicka."

To have an account on faceboobs and instaflunk you have to be 13.

I personally think it should be older than that and if parents allow their offspring to use the sites then they are personally responsible for the fucked up content their child is probably going to see.

With faceshite having the age of 13 being ok to have a facecrap account are they not semi responsible for what the children are accessing on facepuke such as porn, violent live shootings, cyber bullying, hate crimes etc?

So who do you think should be responsible?

personal responsibility
parental responsibility
social media 'giants' responsibility
societal or community responsibility
government responsibility

Is a person at the age of 13 really mature enough to understand and have a fb account? Should zuckerberg be held responsible and allow access to the data or say 18 should be the new age of holding a fb account?

The progressives who have been spreading shit ideas like criminals aren’t responsible for their own actions due to mental illness are to blame. Also, on the polar side, this ‘every unique child gets a trophy’ mentality shit is a fucking sickness. People have to be rewarded or punished for their own actions.

Good boy...or whatever you are. :)

This article doesn't actually state that there is any indication that suicide rates have increased since the advent of social media - given that, it's difficult to really say that social media is really 'causing' any suicides. Pretty much all kids are on social media - it's almost inevitable that any young person who commits suicide be in that group.

If there is a problem here, it's bullying - that happens regardless of available platforms, and always has. As a society, we need to take a bit more responsibility for creating environments and raising kids where that's not so common ... I don't see that happening any time soon though. Blaming the tech won't stop people being bullies.

No bullies here, are there kimmie?

Suicide is not the only solution. Only a weak minded person would think it is.

Then why is predominantly alt right kids who go on mass shooting sprees?

I do my job as a parent very well. But that doesnt stop predators from being predators. Nor does it stop assholes from being assholes. Who is monitoring them? That is the websites' job. If it is my job...then give me names...I will take care of the issue.

It's not a "progressive" idea but rather a "Regressive" idea that people aren't responsible for their own actions. But yeah, I agree with the general sentiment here.

I agree blaming social media will seemingly achieve nothing in the long run.

But I do think as a society we are not as aware as we should be of what our young people are up to and not educating them enough.

So yes parents should be responsible for their children when it comes to social media since it is available almost everywhere they go. Their phones, net cafes, schools, library, friends, hand held devices, ereaders ... the list goes on

"What’s causing today’s young people so much anguish? “This is always a tough question to answer, as we can’t prove for sure what the causes are,” Twenge says. “But there was one change that impacted the lives of young people more than older people, and that was the growth of smartphones and digital media like social media, texting and gaming.”

This is sad reading for those of us in nz.

But I agree with this:

"If we can educate more people on the symptoms of mental illness and find ways of coping with the increasingly invasive nature of social media, perhaps then we can begin to tackle youth suicide and prevent more young lives being tragically cut short."

So we give them the skills as parents but do the social media sites have responsibilities too?

They are the game changers in the way society is now interacting, doing business, socializing, shopping, communicating, networking, searching for information on the internet and so much more.

They make a lot of money from ads, brands, social media influencers.

Man, fuck social media. It's a cancer. Group think, lies, google geniuses and what some asshat you don't like is doing this weekend. People mostly blame Facebook but personally I think Twitter is the worst of them because it spreads bullshit much faster and is therefore more harmful.
I know shit about Instagram other than it seems to be full of incredibly shallow fucktards.

I'm guessing I don't need to point out the irony of this.
