Leather vs Fur lining in a collar

Those look fantastic! For everyday wear though, they would sweat like the dickens with the width. I totally get your concept for the fur for that purpose, plus lessening the chaffing, but my concern is that it would be very difficult to clean. Mink is even harder to handle than most fur, and many dry cleaners can't even handle it. I'm curious about what others will weigh in and say here. I like the concept of lining the leather, personally. Just not sure mink is the way to go. I know of one dominant on here who has pretty extensive experience with making his own collars, I'll hope he chimes in.

Thanks, Angie! Yes, cleaning is the conclusion I came to as well. I should specify that this collar is for a pet play scene and not for extended wear.

sissy has not had a fur lined collar, but leather fells fantastic for play, the trick is not too tight but not too loose. If it moves up and down too much it will chaff but if it is too tight it will cause the sweating and irritation. Most of the time you have to find the right spot and make your own hole.

PS: There is nothing like wearing a locked collar, that feeling is totally different.

Then as long as there is no messy play ( like gagging that leads to excessive spit/ drool or throw up) you should be totally fine!
If you do make it, will you show us? I'd love to flail over its awesomeness!

@ SissySalina re: locked leather collar .... * shivers and nods and smiles* mmhmm

Synthetic or real lambskin works well, too.

That's my leading choice too now that I've seen the collars at Beautifully Bound. AFAIK there are three synthetic fur, one purple velvet, and the rest are what appears to be lambskin.

I might do a rabbit fur trim just for looks and use saddle soap to clean the lambskin lining by hand. A little soap on the fur won't hurt.

I can show you what I've done so far! Cuffs, a chain, a blindfold, a paddle with embossed leather, and a scratch/sooth wand (don't know what they're called.) The flogger has kinky leather falls that sting a little. I'm making another one that is thuddier. I also bought a leash that matches everything.

Here's a link to the image and I also attached it.

Shoot! I meant to reply to this yesterday. Those are incredibly unique looking. Is the leather soft or sturdy? The colors and patina especially on the blindfold are lovely!
The paddle is interesting too. Is it double sided? Does the wood continue under the leather or is it leather only? Lastly the flogger looks interesting, but physics seem odd... would it be hard to land precisely with the eye hook attachment? It seems there would be a ton of sway and range to the possibility of how it would land.

Bravo!

Thanks! I appreciate your input because I'm new to all of this. These toys are intended for short term scenes (1-2 hours). Going with a steampunk theme. Most of the leather here is stiff. On the collar (not pictured) I used supple garment leather per the discussion above. The mask is pliable and lined with sable fur. Pitch black. I like how it turned out!

The paddle is 1/4" wood. One side is varnished wood. The other has a thin layer of embossed leather. It's light and kinda stingy. I threw it in there just cause I figured there should be a paddle.

The "flogger" is actually a scratch wand. I don't know the technical term for it. It has a flexible point at one end for leaving delicate scratch marks. The leather fob at the other end is very soft and is meant to soothe where the scratch marks just were.

You should clean toys when switching to different subs at different times. How do you do that with fur?
For leather I spray with 70% alcohol and let dry overnight. If it gets stiff, oil with olive oil or good mink oil. Saddle soap if it actually gets dirty, but that is rare.
You should seek advice from Bootblacks for leather care.

Good things to think about! These are a gift to one person so I'm not worried about switching. I'll use your tip about the alcohol, thanks.

The leather conditioner I made to finish the parts is part beeswax and part mineral oil. My plan is, once these are done, clean all leather with saddle soap, wipe all hard surfaces with alcohol, and let dry overnight. I plan to use soapy water to clean the fur then blot it with huck towels.

I have used soap and water to clean belts that were made from a solid leather but you have to be careful to let them dry then condition them. Not sure about fur... especially if you can't get at the back side leather of the fur to condition it. As I said, I used olive oil, which I also use on my skin to reduce dry skin. :)

Although a fur lined collar would undoubtedly be more comfortable, I love the feel of leather on my skin, so that's where my vote goes.

My favorite collar is leather with the soft Swede on the inside. I would wear it all the time but I can't at work.

Fur is hot as the heckin heck in thick collars and that can leave it sweaty. It's also really hard to clean. But, on the upside, it looks nice and is comfortable.

I think leather could be a better choice, at least in terms of cleanliness and its generally soft enough that it doesn't chafe. Another alternative is to do an under lining of something like satin or felt which can be removed and washed.

I'm into leather too. Fur-lined is softer and nicer, but potentially tickly and difficult to clean if it's meant for long-term wear.
