New Lit Story Page Preview

Question/Suggestion:

The new version of Word has a feature that has a voice which could read the text to you.

How much would it cost Literotica to have a feature that reads the story for you by voice? Is such a thing plausible in the future?

Microsoft Edge browser will already do that. :D

And if your browser doesn't have a text-to-speech feature built in, there's plenty to install in the form of extensions, addons, plugins, or however your browser calls those. I know my sister uses an addon for Chrome that reads text to her, as she's dyslexic and reading along with the spoken words is a lot less frustrating to her than reading it all on her own.

That said, I do think there's things you can do to help such programs on the programming side of things. There's tags or options that tell screen readers to skip a part (for example the navigation) and where to start reading the text. I don't know how if that information exits in the HTML of either story page, but it's not crucial for such programs to function. The existence of this information just makes them a bit more pleasant to use.

them a bit more pleasant to use.

I just tried mine. It's not a comforting read-you-to-sleep voice. Rather harsh and some very silly interpretations of the punctuation. Sometimes it uses periods to stop. Sometimes it calls them dots and moves right on.

And some interesting interpretations of pronunciation.

Still if I took a story and converted it to html it would do the reading it before publishing it trick. That might be worthwhile.

Overall like the new page, but I miss the view all comments option, and viewing complete comments older to newer.

at a first glance, the only thing i would recommend would be a thicker line underneath the current page number at the bottom. With the low profile font on the numbers a slightly thicker line would pop a little more.

The pagination has been updated in the latest release. Please let me know if you think it's easier to understand. We fixed the issue where the page you're on was blue and the linked pages were black. We also increased the thickness of the underline slightly. We still need to fix the hover effects on desktop, but that should be looked at soon.

Thank you again for suggesting changes. :D

I have one story (https://literotica.com/beta/s/coming-home-105) where I have a longer italic text which happens to go over a page break. It starts with the intended style on page 2 but continues in regular text on page 3.
That's not new, though. It already is that way in the current format.

That's not something this new page would fix, I assume that's just the way it's stored in the database from when you submitted it. I don't know how you submit, but personally I paste into the text box on the submissions field and make sure every paragraph is wrapped in its own italics tags and that one set of tags never includes an empty line. That seems to prevent this issue from happening, as the system doesn't break up paragraphs but only seems to cut off a page after an empty line (or line break at least). So this way start and end tags should always stay together. Not sure how to do that if you upload using Word files or something similar though... Perhaps select the paragraphs one by one and mark them as having italics, but make sure there's an empty line in between them that's marked as being regular text?

I also copy and paste but only use tags in the beginning and the end not for every paragraph. If/when I need it again, I'll know better. Thanks!

Lit page breaks play havoc with html, so I'd be keeping italics to a minimum. But why would you have whole blocks of text italicized in the first place? You'll be messing with reader's eyes.

It was a letter and I wanted to make that obvious...

I've written a story in which there are flashbacks (memories) which are in italics.

Difficult in the new page look. Before, the pages were cut in the preview and you could gauge that. No longer.
I'd be keeping an eye on the placement in the original Word file - if I was to do block italics at all, which I wouldn't.

Having been caught several times by html fails, there are other ways to signify flashbacks. I'd make it clear from context alone - I only ever use plain text now.

If I could have any one change, I'd like to be able to display separate chapter titles on the story page. All my series chapters have their own titles, which are only visible once you've opened the story.

This is a known issue with the way we process HTML. In the future, we'll be moving to a markup based system where authors will use code similar to what is used here on the forum instead of HTML. Once we have that standard in place, it should be easier for us to keep track of formatting across page breaks.

On the new story page, I am finding I am really starting to miss the expanded bottom links from the older story pages, in particular the ability to hop to the search and tag functions. Beyond that, the ability to open all the comments was useful & missing in the new page.

How will that impact people who upload a document, rather than copying and pasting into the text box?

(I haven't uploadind anyting with a long enough italics passage to worry about, but I have a project in the works where that might be an issue)

Thanks for the reply. It's really a minor issue but I'm still looking forward to seeing resolved (in new stories, only, I assume)...

I tend to upload my stories using Word documents. Is there a bug regarding centred, bold chapter numbers? I keep asking for them, but they never happen. It worked the first time, but it's never happened since. Is this a technical issue?

I miss the old comments page where I could see all the comments against a story with 50 per page. Is that still there? When I clicked on the comments link, I got redirected to the same page.

Example URL : https://www.literotica.com/stories/storyfeedbackboard.php?id=629929&pagehint=6
I've asked for that also. It's a pain when there a like 100 comments, and you have to hit "Siew more" 20 times! It looks like they've fixed the "Read more" on the longer comments.

Scores

Not directly related to the new story page, but why do entire scores get wiped out? I'm not talking about 1-bombs being swept but ANY score on a story. I often go back to a story I've read when it comes up on the Recent comments, and when I get to the end I don't see any score, even though I KNOW I've scored it. Again, these aren't ones, they're 3s, 4s and 5s.

There is an item missing on the new page... When you hover the cursor over the number of other people who have favorited your story, nothing shows up. ON the old page your would get a list of other users who liked your story.
