One of the benefits of American citizenship is being able to freely speak and voice an opinion, even if it differs from yours. Even if it’s critical of the gun culture and the president. It applies in equal measure, whether your Republican or Democrat, man or woman, brown, white or black.

This incident happened in California, but it is just another in a long list of similar incidents that happen everywhere in gun-happy USA, red and blue states alike.

Why not make the owners of the firearms liable? Not just the one using the gun, but the registered owner. I bet ‘responsible’ gun owners would be way more conscientious about locking up guns and ammo appropriately, using trigger locks, and basically treating them like the lethal tools they are.

If you are a responsible gun owner and have your weapons safely and securely locked away, you should not be opposed to this at all. It would certainly make irresponsible gun owners smarten up and take better care of their firearms.

Guess what nutsack???.....if the parents allowed the kid to get the gun, bet they already are liable.

Also, like... the fact that we're at a point as a culture where it's like, "Ah yes, the daily murder spree". That's just how we're gonna live our lives, I guess. Just sent my kid to school. So that's great. That's how I fuckin love living my life.

I will say, since we're all saying shit, that I do with we'd stop framing this conversation around stuff that doesn't seem to matter, like guns or mental illness. I really wish we would tackle the underlying causes of these attacks that arise from how fucking shitty our culture is in regard to the group that is most at-risk for mass-shooting behavior and just fucking fix it. But we're not doing that, for some reason that I will never understand.

Should we frame the conversation around toxic masculinity? White privilege and how being raised in a culture that asserts entitlement and provides literally NO emotion-focused coping strategies to boys who are constantly told they're entitled to things and don't know how to react when they find out that's not how the real world is? Should we maybe try to change the culture and accept that these aren't grown-ass madmen with guns, but troubled children who were failed by their culture and try to change said culture to make it a safer place for our children so this stops fucking happening?

No that's too much work so we're gonna keep looking for scapegoats instead of admitting that we fucked this up and now we're seeing the reaction to how bad we fucked this up and that the only possible way we can change it is to unfuck it? To give these kids actual resources so they don't go online and join fucking death cults? Like we literally have people who escaped this culture who can actually tell us how to help these kids? We're just not gonna admit that this is a literal terrorist organization recruiting and indoctrinating children and try to fucking fix it in any way, huh? We're just gonna keep pretending it's "a bad guy with a gun"? That's... just what we're gonna do, I guess.

And I get that it's easier to kill people with a gun than most other things, because guns are meant to kill people. You all know I'm not one of those crazy, "Guns can't be used to kill people" jackasses.

But that is a bandaid. It is. It's not going to solve the problem, because the problem's not about guns. And I get that people don't want to hear that, because that seems like such an easy solution. And sensible gun control would cut down on the ease with which these kids are killing other kids. But it wouldn't stop it, because the problem isn't the method, it's the mindset. When these kids live, they interview them, and we have a profile for the motivation. We know what it is. These kids face rejection and isolation, and unlike many people, they have no social support structure or coping mechanisms for this normal part of life. We have created a culture that is not helping these kids, and we need to fix it. Because if we don't give them a culture, they go and find it. If we don't start teaching our kids, "It's ok if you get rejected, here's how to handle it. It's ok to just cry it out. Everything is eventually going to be ok." Or, "I was bullied too, here's how to handle it in a healthy way." Then they're going to keep doing what they're doing- being in a vulnerable time in their life when they find a group full of other people they think they connect with, and being radicalized with bullshit.

And in that mindset, something terrible is going to happen, sooner or later. It's not always a kid with a gun, sometimes it's a grown man with a car. But it's the same mindset. This is a domestic terrorist organization, and that is what we need to stop.

This is a LOT deeper than "guns are bad". This is a terrorist organization preying on our children, and excuse me if it makes me angry that people don't seem to be getting that. I was an at-risk youth. I work with at-risk youth. And normal kids don't just decide to go on shooting sprees, even if they have access to weapons. Even if they have access to weapons that people consider weapons of war. If we want to fix this, we have to address the real problem.

I'm not saying that you have to watch these interviews, but if you really want to understand what the real problem is, it would behoove you to watch the interviews.
