That's a deeper question than you might think. The smartstim website has a lot of great information and beginner advice. I'd suggest starting there (smartstim dot com).

In a nutshell, one of the reasons that Tens boxes are popular is that they are pretty inexpensive. If you don't like the hobby, you can walk away with only a small investment. Of course, you may also be doomed to fail. You may not get anything out of the Tens - and sometimes that's because some power boxes are extremely low quality. Still, some people like them and getting on smartstim is a good start.

At the very high end are the made-for-play stim boxes and a boggling array of commercial electrodes. Some people invest $500 and more. Most people don't want to make that investment until they're sure they love the hobby.

There are some boxes in the middle. Even there, it helps to talk to people who've used them. For the adventurous like me there's DIY. If you're handy with a soldering iron there are designs on smartstim that you can build from parts available at an electronics store. I built mine for less than $60. It basically converts audio files (made specifically for stim) to electrical signals that feel good.

Just as important as the box is taking the time to learn how to play. There's a lot of personal preference, electrode placement, and trial and error. Give yourself a few months to figure out what you like. Again, there's a world of advice on smartstim.

yes, used it on my pubic area after shaving. its best to shave as close as possible becuz it can get pretty dicey if you don't keep good contact between the pad and your skin. and you better be well verse in a light touch in dialing that tens in on the freq you want.
