Not salty or anything, this is purely academic.

So just curious if anyone knows about the Raters and Ratings (Ratings and Voters) sections of our stories. I'm a bit of a nerd and have been tracking my numbers on my stories. Basically everything that Literotica lets be download I do and then port into a Excel doc, whenever I can remember to do it over the last year or so.

Because it was part of the Halloween contest I was watching my last story a little bit more than usual. And while I didn't a hundred percent track all the weirdness I did the most dramatic parts. On 10/14 I was at 354 Votes and a Rating of 4.48. This is about average for me so I didn't think too much of it. Sort of hoped that I could get over that edge to hot but if not... Such is life. Then on 10/18 I pulled my numbers again 359/4.48 seems about right. It goes a while to 10/29 before I can pull the numbers again up to 4.51 so it's "hot". Awesome! But my vote count is now 358 which sort of confuses me that it's down by one but my rating is higher. I pull my numbers today... 350 votes and a rating of 4.6, super weird.

TL;DR
10/14 Votes: 354 Rating: 4.48
10/18 Votes: 359 Rating: 4.48
10/29 Votes: 358 Rating: 4.51
11/02 Votes: 350 Rating: 4.6

So was I (and others in the contest) getting Trolled or something and they pulled the negative votes/voter?
The Voter/Rating system just got some glitches in it and it caught up with reality?
Or something else?

It sucks that for 19 days essentially nobody has voted on my story but... 4.6 is good.

is higher. I pull my numbers today... 350 votes and a rating of 4.6, super weird.

There is a clique of voters that love to 1 bomb authors. In any contest those votes are swept before the winner is determined. Thus the lost votes. It's not that no one voted during that time, just the bad votes from throughout the contest period went bye bye. That's a good thing here. ;)

The sweeps are supposed to remove spurious votes. It does seem that both low and high votes can be deleted and evidence of such deletions easily seen in the vote total for a story.

Beyond that, the owners strongly discourage speculation as to how the sweeps actually work, lest the trolls use that to more expertly game the system.

Welcome to the Monkey House.

And, yes, 4.6 is a very respectable score, so congratulations. Here’s hoping your future ones do even better.

I had someone 2-bomb my Halloween story after the contest was over and the votes didn’t even count any more. Why? I’ll never know. It’s not like they left a nasty comment or anything either, to try to get a rise out of me. Just some kind of spiteful thing that they somehow get their jollies from? I don’t know. But I think that was enough to bump it off of the ‘Hall of Fame’ list too, which it had precariously snuck into the tail end of. That felt good...for a day, though. :)

There's your answer, I'd say.

But I think that was enough to bump it off of the ‘Hall of Fame’ list too,

You got it in one! It's a common complaint and probably another author. You may have bumped their story by the success of yours. You'll never know. There's just too much shit that goes on around here to keep track of it all. :(

Yes.

It's called a "sweep," and the AH has had roughly 47 billion threads about the way it's believed to work. Do some reading; I think you'll find this section of the forum contains a lot of other writers that are as obsessive about spreadsheeting their votes as you seem to be.

They probably have a lot of information that'll interest you. But, again, it's all been discussed here for years.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed but I like to think it will tell me something if X kind of story does better than Y. Even though it doesn't really matter because I can't really force myself to write anything I don't want too. So if I knew Y did better I'd still end up on X, or B, or J because that's what my brain wanted to explore at the time. If everyone knew how many half or three quarter stories I had in my Google Drive that I started but couldn't finish before my damn brain ran off into another direction... That's another reason why I track the numbers, seeing people are reading and enjoying my creations is another payoff for finishing. It has helped me push through, like ignoring the Troll Comments which I think might be getting filtered now too. Those used to destroy me but I decided if I saw one that was pure Troll I'd just delete it, and move on. Turns out I haven't had too. There has been a couple bad comments but not anything I considered Trollish. I think my new attitude shows because I've been posting more lately.

I'm glad it's on purpose and not a weird glitch. Oh and if anybody out there has the power I'd really like a read through statistic. If somebody lands on page one of one of my stories how many of them click through to the following pages. That would tell me if people are reading it through and not voting or just landing, reading a paragraph, and bouncing. (I swear I'm not obsessed!)

Thanks everyone!

With a single submission story there is zero way of knowing how many Views translate to full Reads.

You can get a rough idea from multi-chapter stories, where you can reasonably use the Views of the third chapter as an indication as to how many will read to the last chapter.

Typically, the second chapter will have half the Views as the first, and the third chapter drops by another 50% - in other words, Reads might be around 20% - 25% of the first chapter Views.

This rule of halves doesn't always apply. For my latest story, the second chapter Views are actually catching up with the first chapter - that's unusual, in my experience.

Defluer - how about posting up some links to your stories so that we can easily find them and read them.

Damn I like to read stuff that attracts '4.+'

Yeah, you're right. We should just just scrap the entire forum because most things have been asked before. And, now that I think about it, I think most stories have been told, so we might as well scrap the entire Literotica website.

For quite some time I had over 30 stories that were all over 4.50, and one that was not. That story sat for more than a year at 4.49. Every once in a while it would creep above 4.50, then in a few days, get a 1 or 2 vote and drop back down.

Maybe someone doesn't like me, or they really hate that one particular chapter in a 13 chapter series, or maybe they just thought it was funny, but the lesson to be learned is that ratings are a very imperfect measure of quality.

But it's all new to newbies.

We all started in ignorance, so long haul members should pass on the information when folk ask. It's not hard to do that.

Did I say that?

Nope. I said “do some reading,” which was not meant even remotely sarcastically. Others here do the spreadsheet thing; I know, because I’ve seen their work. On other threads. Threads that newbs can (and should) productively seek out... and read.

There’s a reason things are archived, too. And there’s a reason there’s a search function.

If the policy is that any newcomer read through previous posts to find answers to their question before posting it, then AH will quickly dry up--or at least deteriorate into never-ending threads of word games and nonsense. If you want to help the OP, maybe point them to one of these previous threads that you think answers the posted question.

And the moment anyone dares to respond to one of those archived threads, they get lambasted for thread necromancy. LOL

Some people don't mind answering the same question or discussing the same subject umpteen times. If you're not one of those people, then give the thread a miss.

Though I haven't done it in some time, I used to track my data quarterly across all three pen names.

Here's the most recent one from about a year ago. The last quarterly track was back in 2016. The Lit Stats Home link leads to the list of each track.

May have to run a track, since it's been about a year.

Yes, all you have to do to find the answer to a question about rating is to search for the keyword "Spreadsheet." Any newcomer who doesn't realize this obviously deserves a snarky response.

And they have to show their tits. :)

As Tomlitilia points out, it's not reasonable to expect newcomers to do a great deal of research and search throughout these thread archives to get questions answered, in part because they would have no idea what to search for. No one would think to search for "spreadsheets." No one unfamiliar with sweeps would know to search for "sweeps."

Besides, it's quicker just to post a question.

Newcomer questions generate new threads, and that's generally a good thing. While they may promote retreading old ground, they sometimes raise new issues, too.

That said, I've long thought that this site could do a much better organizing and presenting in a clear, accessible format all the different rules and guidelines for the Site and how it works. Information, instead, is spread all over the place.

The Cabala of sex.

Or, maybe, the internet of sex. The truth may be out there, but good luck finding it.

Wow.

There’s no pleasing some people.
