Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday said his government would "happily" open an investigation into potential interference from Ukraine in the 2016 U.S. election.

The comments from Zelensky come more than two months after Trump asked the foreign president to look into matters related to Ukraine and the U.S. election during a phone call between the two leaders. The phone call is at the center of a whistleblower complaint that prompted an impeachment inquiry in the House.

Speaking to reporters, Zelensky said Ukraine could not make a determination on whether it was involved in election interference without an investigation, according to The Associated Press.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko told Hill.TV’s John Solomon in an interview aired on Wednesday that he has opened a probe into alleged attempts by Ukrainians to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“Today we will launch a criminal investigation about this and we will give legal assessment of this information,” Lutsenko said last week.

Lutsenko is probing a claim from a member of the Ukrainian parliament that the director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), Artem Sytnyk, attempted to influence the 2016 vote to the benefit of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

A State Department spokesman told Hill.TV that officials are aware of news reports regarding Sytnyk.

"We have always emphasized the need for deep, comprehensive, and timely reforms that respond to the demands the Ukrainian people made during the Revolution of Dignity: an end to systemic corruption, faster economic growth, and a European future for all Ukrainians," a State spokesperson told Hill.TV.

The President is the chief law enforcement officer of the United States by oath. He has every right to investigate the unlawful activities of any U.S. citizen engaged in such activities, especially how they relate to a plot to interfere in the 2016 election against his presidential campaign in 2016, which is what you assholes used to be concerned about.

The President of Ukraine has stated his government has found evidence the previous Ukrainian government did in fact plot to interfere with the Trump campaign in order to help Hillary and has delivered the evidence to the DOJ, which is why Durham's investigation was widened and expanded into a criminal investigation..

The President doesn't have to confine his conversations to any particular topic when conversing with a foreign leader, the Lt. Col's concern notwithstanding. The president, not the State Department, the National Security Council, dictates the foreign policy of the United States. People like Vindman are employed to carry it out or resign. The fucking Lt. Col. should be court martial ed for sticking his nose into the politics of the situation as he is supposed to be apolitcal. At the very least he should be disciplined for not knowing his place in the scheme of things and for understanding how his government works under the Constitution he's sworn to protect, but then again he was born in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union.

Attorneys for the whistleblower who submitted a complaint about President Trump's July 25 call with Ukraine's president, prompting the impeachment process to begin, declined to confirm or deny that their client was Eric Ciaramella, a career CIA officer.

RealClearInvestigations reported Wednesday that Ciaramella was the whistleblower. The Washington Examiner has established, however, that there was at least one significant factual inaccuracy in the report, which was written by Paul Sperry, a partisan pro-Trump figure who had released Ciaramella's name via Twitter earlier this month and whom critics accuse of trading in disinformation and conspiracy theories.

Asked whether their client was Ciaramella, 33, attorneys Mark Zaid and Andrew Bakaj told the Washington Examiner in a statement: "We neither confirm nor deny the identity of the Intelligence Community Whistleblower."
