i'm not defending his attitude that was considered war-mongering amongst many: what i am doing is pointing out even he recognised the vital role of allies—their support and american support of them—and the threats posed by the positions of both china and russia to american values. the irreconcilable differences in his views (based on 40 years of 'immersion' in the situations) and the current president's couldn't be more clear
I read it when he submitted it publicly. But understand, General Mattis, a fine apolitical officer, was never involved in the political decisions involving the deployment of our military, as his job was to carry them them out instead. He was a warrior, the point on our national spear, and didn't worry about the niceties of political behavior or speech.
