A guy just asked me to play this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cWnz8sn11Y

It's Killing Me Softly. This is the Roberta Flack version.

When I asked him why he wanted me to play it, he told me to listen to the words and how it applied to me. He wouldn't clarify any more than that.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

That's a pretty deep song. I hope you know him pretty well because otherwise.. run...:D

I think he meant to be clever and cryptic and come across as a sensitive type. But as I'm none of these things I could be completely wrong :D

No matter who sings it I've always assumed it was about a song and how a person listening to a performance is moved or affected by listening

I thought that too but... I also thought maybe he thought he meant that he felt that way by listening to *me*. I could be wrong though. He's not always the direct type.

Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,

The pop/R&B version of another somebody done somebody wrong song (country version).

I always thought the song was about that one song..the one that really resonates with you. Your life and all its ups and downs. So maybe you're right. Its how he feels when he listens to you. That he really resonates with you.

Just spitballing here. Cuz now I'm curious.

fuck that. Direct or nothing, I hate vague

I’m pretty sure this song was inspired by a Don Mclean performance of Empty Chairs. It seems a strange song to relate to a personal situation.

I looked up the meaning and it did say that it was the feelings that Roberta Flack had while attending a Don Mclean concert.

I have never written a song for him. In fact I haven't written song since I was a teen. I did write him a poem about a year ago. It was about how there many things I wanted to say to him, but it wasn't always easy to find the right words. But it was about how much I appreciate him in my life.

More recently, I have written things for him at his request but these related to love, relationships, the universe, etc.

Wait! There's more! I did look this up again and it said Don Mclean was doing a tribute to Buddy Holly when he sang, "The Day The Music Died".

*That* song has meaning to me because it was my first fiance's favorite song. My fiance died in a car crash. It was a great many years until I could hear that song without getting upset. I actually never really liked the song. It just reminded me of Michael.

And part of the reason his death bothered me so much is because my mom lied to me about it at the time. He had moved to another state. We had secretly planned to elope when I was old enough, but my mom found some letters about it and didn't let me know until afterwards.

His mom contacted my mom about the accident and my mom kept telling me that he was in a coma. I had a strong feeling he had died. I was right. This was just before school started. I went back to school and other students were consoling me about his death. That is how I found out!

I was left with a mixture of emotions, none of them good! Mostly I was furious with my mom for lying to me and making me look the fool to my friends.

I actually handle death very well. So it wasn't that. It was just that the song reminded me of what my mom did. She said she lied because she was afraid I would run away to go see him. Uh... He was dead!

Anyway... Now the waters are even more miuddied. And yes, he knows of this story. I told him of this when we first met. Mostly as an example or what females who are young, might be likely to do. Such as run off with some hot guy without really thinking things through.

I love that song. It has always been one of my top faves. It was written about Buddy Holly but can be applied to any of our favourite artists who have passed because when they die, that's the day their music dies.

The ex had issues because her mom lied to her growing up & it caused me so many needless problems.

I never assume that others will lie. But I can't trust a thing my mom says. Worse still, she likes to stir up drama by lying to others about others to make them angry at each other. Now I just try to listen and not react. Easier said than done, I know!

My mom was the same way, a trouble maker. Someone once described my mom as a "pistol". I said "Fuck no, she's a fully automatic assault rifle".
