I had a boss once who to all the world seemed like this mild-mannered middle-aged lady (she looked a little bit like Mrs. Garrett on The Facts of Life). One day after I had been there a month or so, she out of the blue started going on this rant about "niggers" and the "white witches" who married them. (Needless to say, this was an all-white environment.)

I figured out what had prompted this: someone had asked an innocent question about whether anyone had watched the Olympics the previous night, and my boss had gotten infuriated by a human interest story about a U.S. wrestler who had a military background. In the course of the piece they happened to show his wife; he was black and she was white. "I think it's wrong; that's just how I was raised," she said by way of explaining this insane outburst.

I realized in time that the rest of this company wasn't much more enlightened.

I don’t recall him cracking a whip at 4am. to motivate us to pick cotton, but for some reason he loved to run our asses in the ground all the time. I’ve never seen anyone that loved to run to nowhere and back as much as him.

I worked for a company with 250 employees. The owner asked the IT department for something he couldn't seem to get out of our payroll management system: a report of employee health care expenses ranked top-to-bottom. (We were self-insured).

The list was produced.

Two weeks later, our profitable company had a "targeted layoff"...the top 10 people with the most health care expenses were terminiated.

This included

• A woman with a husband who required dialysis
• A young woman with a hydrocephalic infant
• A man with prostate cancer who was 63 and two years away from medicare
• A guy with a plate in his head from a car crash
• A woman with a daughter who had Down's Syndrome, the daughter got the lymphoma cancer common to kids with Down's.
• etc etc etc

This was the age of "pre-existing condition". Three of the ten laid off were dead within a year afterwards.

The owner died of a heart attack shortly thereafter, in bed with his son's wife.

I hope there is a special place in hell for him, and all of you folks against Obamacare and Medicare for All understand the consequences of your support of "repeal and replace".
