I went to China a couple of times in the '90's and found that it was so smoggy some days you couldn't see the other side of the street for the coal smoke. They were all "We're Free Market Communists now" but they we're just foolin'.

Sounds like an opportunity that VRBO and the other vacation rental companies need to hear about.

I went to China (the Reagan trip) in 1984. Before tourism there but not before city smog.

The video in the OP was from 2011 but other videos up to last year show the same thing. Real Estate is the one thing that can hold value in China for the up and coming FMC's.

Free market communist LOL what a self contradiction.

Maybe decades of starving to death from "progressive" economics had them hungry for a little capitalism.

"Progressive" folks should take note.....maybe read a history book and find how "green" and "progressive" agriculture worked out in Soviet Ukraine.

The soviets never learnt the lesson of a free market. They eschewed capitalism right until the end. In the end they could not compete with the west at any level and they, predictably, collapsed.

The Chinese were not so stupid. They saw the need to move away from collectivism and embrace the free market. While they have a way to go before they could be called capitalist they are moving forward quickly. If they maintain their direction, economically speaking, they will be pushing the states to being the largest economy in the world, especially if trump gets another term to finish his job of dismantling the USA economy.

Human rights issues are a minor consideration, their citizenry have been ignorant of alternatives even though the Internet is changing this. But in the greater scheme of things the state control over personal freedoms will work to China's advantage, economically.

China is no longer communist (if in fact they ever were) and to think of them as such is a mistake. While the ruling party will maintain an iron rule they will also keep moving forward with their very effective programme of economic modernisation. They are not weak, or vulnerable in any sense, they will absorb everything the yanks throw at them and just keep going. The longer trump continues his foolish trade war, that he cannot win, the more likely it is that other nations will step up to fill the gaps and opportunities that are becoming available. Trump has done so much to alienate the traditional American allies that they will have no concerns about exploiting the opportunities trump has abandoned.
