It’s hard to exaggerate the threat represented by Corbyn and Co. taking control of our most important ally.

Tory prime minister Boris Johnson has, to his credit, seized the initiative in the battle over whether Britain will truly exit the EU, and on what terms.

But no one can know how this high-stakes gamble will turn out. Johnson just lost his slender parliamentary majority, and the prospect of a new election looms. If things break the wrong way, the winner could be opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, a throwback leftist redolent of the bad old days of Britain’s self-imposed stagnation.

It’s hard to exaggerate the threat represented by Corbyn and Co. taking control of our most important ally. In U.S. terms, Corbyn is a mashup of Bernie Sanders and the Squad, mixing orthodox socialist economics with a hostility to U.S. foreign policy and Israel.

He is a lefty caricature. George Orwell once complained of “the smell of crankishness” in the socialist movement, and wished he could send every vegetarian and teetotaler home “to do his yoga exercises quietly.”

Corbyn’s past, and present, is littered with valentines to left-wing thugs. He cozied up to the IRA in the 1980s when it was trying to decapitate the British government by bombing. He wrote for a pro-Soviet newspaper during the Cold War. He called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “not unprovoked.” He’s said warm things about Hamas and Hezbollah, and can’t bear to condemn Islamic terrorism without also criticizing the West.

The shit that Boris is facing right now demonstrates one of the major difference between our democracies. The pm mas limited power, can be ousted if enough politicians want it, and often need opposition party support to carry through major changes. Seriously, don't get your knickers in a twist about us swapping the jack for a hammer and sickle.

Sanders in the US and Corbyn in the UK - works for me.

(If there is a UK after Scotland goes the route of independence and N Ireland unites with the Republic. I suppose that does leave Wales)

The EU 'backstop' is an attempt by Ireland to take over Northern Ireland. If they succeed the violence will be far worse than 'The Troubles'.

Righties really don't like democracy, do they? Boris tried to be a dictator and parliament fucked him. And we're watching the destruction of the Conservative party, which is quite fun. When the walking haystack expels the likes of Ken Clark and Fatty Soames, you know they've been taken over by a bunch of nutjobs.

Well then maybe they become their own country. The world could use another self-governing people.

A true case of be careful what you wish for. Happy Brexit.

The Labour Party has an even greater number of nutjobs.

If there is a general election, which Labour might oppose because they are well down in opinion polls, no one could predict what the result might be. So many traditional voters are fed up with the Conservatives' mess on Europe and Labour's change from agreeing to accept the referendum result to opposing May's deal or a No-Deal Brexit with no clear policy at all.

The only major gainer is likely to be the Liberals, but not enough to form a government.

As for reece moggs stance yesterday!

Anyone seen cameron since he fucked this one up?

its good to see the tories implode, but we will pay the price for it, im certain. child poverty UP, Pensioner poverty UP, in work poverty UP, the tory scum couldn't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves. hopefully they wont all escape.

I always had you down as a nutjob aswell :D

BUT - what if Boris and the blue rinse gang somehow manage to pull off a deal which makes Brexit palatable? you know - no food shortages, no medicine shortages, that kind of thing. what if they also manage to put in place something that small businesses can understand inorder that they might survive brexit (even today many still dont know what the special holding accounts are supposed to be)

Then they would be national heroes..............

typical boris tactic - its always someone elses fault.

Dude, Stormont hasn't sat for over two years. Mad cunts can't agree on anything.

So either they go it alone or they join the republic I'd imagine. What is the alternative - ? A new border? I don't see them going back to borders and armed guards and checkpoints.

If Scotland votes for independence I'd imagine it would ignite more calls to separate from the UK (in some fashion).

What if Northern Ireland gets to 'merge' with the feenian bastards in the south it could be called'New Norhern Ireland', then they could have a war with scotland, the winners get wales?

Oh, the irony.

I can think of another prominent Western leader who has said similar ambivalent things about the invasion of Ukraine...but I digress. This is all pretty hysterical. Corbyn doesn't hold much appeal for me, but Britain has had Labour governments before and everyone has survived just fine. (And if there is an election, from everything I've seen it's hard to see how Labour wins it.)

Seems to me the threat to democracy is coming more from the unelected PM who wants to sideline Parliament for a few weeks.

I spent all of yesterday evening watching BBC Parliament. Watching again now cos it's raining at Old Trafford. I doubt there's a more punchable face in Britain than Jacob Rees Mogg's.

It is NOT raining at old trafford It's the tears running down Gods face as he pisses himself laughing at boris johnson.

The frankly traitorous parliament is busy trying to overturn the largest democratic result in our country's history, meanwhile Boris extends a planned three week parliamentary break to a five week one. He's literally Hitler! The hypocrisy of remoaners beggars belief.

The man is a living saint for taking on all those dirty dirty smear merchants and beating them at their own game every single time.

So were that to occur would the UK cease to exist? Would the Queen have to stop vacationing in Scotland? Would there be a royal family if it was just England and no Kingdom?

Smears like moving his hedge fund business to Ireland so the Brexit disaster won't affect him personally or smears like his company has been shorting the pound so he can make millions in profit from the disaster he helped cause?
